Radar is a little sharp with strangers but wins over quickly.
I had the door unlocked because I was getting ready to take Shelby and Radar to the park. A drunk guy I have never seen before opened the door and walked in, Shelby ran over to sniff at him, he kicked her in the ribs, and Radar latched onto his calf and wouldn't let go while the guy screamed and repeatedly hit him in the head. I was screaming, Shelby was screaming, my neighbors rushed in and tried to pull Radar off of him. I screamed OUT OUT! and he let go and my neighbor grabbed him because he wanted to bite again. There's blood all over my carpet and walls, Radar has a gash on his cheek from the guy banging him into a table, and both dogs were checked out by the ER vet and are okay. The police were called, the guy was brought to the hospital, and they said they'd have animal control come out tomorrow but that I shouldn't have any issues as long as my dogs are UTD on shots which they are.
What do I do with Radar? I realize he is freaked out by this. I had to muzzle him for the first time ever because he wouldn't let anyone at the vet office near him/me/maybe just him? I don't know. I don't know if he was being protective of Shelby because she got hit, was being protective of me, or if he's been itching for a bite and finally got the chance. He has lunged at someone before, but that was a month ago and he's never done it before or since. Now he's in his kennel and growls at the slightest noise outside like my neighbors walking up the steps.
What should I do? He's 7 months on the 16th. I just want him to get over this.
Wow! How scarey! I would think that he would be overcautious after his first incident like that, so I'd give him some time and try to keep everything as normal as possible in his routine. Act like nothing is different and live in the moment. (I agree with the steak too! What a good boy to help in such an unexpected situation!) You all were lucky, esp the guy who just got bit and not shot!
I don't know if there IS a problem, but I want to prevent one. I don't want this to lead to Radar thinking he can just bite or try to bite anyone he doesn't know. He's already wary of strangers, and I'm afraid this will lead to actual aggression instead of him just being uncomfortable and warning them.
I'm not mad at him, but I was really freaked out for my dogs and myself. The guy was hitting him really hard, I could hear the thuds on his skull. I had him xrayed to make sure he's okay, and he is. I was also afraid for Shelby because she kept screaming while hiding under the table and biting at her ribs in pain.
A stranger that walks into your house, kicks your dog, is lucky he only encountered a set of teeth from a 7 month old pup, drunk or not,he's a lucky guy.
