When we moved in here last November, there was a sizeable grape vine covered in ripe black grapes, I stripped the whole lot off and hacked the vine back to a stump, I have had to keep on it most of the summer, and with the Autumn around the corner, I would ideally like to remove it completely, the only problem is, except for a few inches around the base, the people that planted it surrounded it in concrete so short of getting a sledge hammer to it, what I wondered was, if I score an x on the stump to open it up, what can I feed into it that will soak in and kill it at the roots, I seem to remember reading somewhere about a soft metal paste, but obviously it has to be safe for the dogs, is this doable or am I going to have to resort the the sledge hammer?!
There is a herbicide called Tordan that should do the trick on a freshly cut woody plant, especially at this time of year, when stuff is taken down into the roots.
I have googled Tordan for sale in the UK, but it is only available to the trade and at minimum 5 litre orders, we are so regulated as to what we can buy here its ridiculous! reading the data on it sounds like it would have been perfect!
I have kept on top of the new growth, so all thats left is the stump I hacked down, but the damn thing just keeps growing! The previous people planted some monster climbers and trees in such a small garden, its like a full time Jumanji through the spring and summer months!
Thanks Connie, lots of stuff there I have in the cupboard, the days of the vine may now well be numbered! now if I could only persuade the people to my left to cut back their giant red maple...!
