Ed has an excellent tape called Training the Competition Heeling Dog, with Tom Rose and some of his students. It's a great tape focusing on this subject.
That tape is excellent but Ed has a new one with Bernard Flinks. Even better. To add a little power with your focus I have in the past used a prong collar giving continuous light pops on the prong while the dog heals and looks up at me. It has worked well to bring power into dogs that lack such. This is an advanced technique that if done incorrectly could screw up your dog in the heal. Done correctly he does not see the pops as corrections. Compare it to bringing out aggression with the prong in protection. But this brings out power.
You mean we're talking about *Sch* heeling?? Why didn't they say so?
I don't think it's so bad, *if* the dog has learned to watch you b/c you are more interesting than anything else in the universe <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Al B has a neat trick for pups, saw it at a seminar. He gives the *fuss*, then as soon as the pup makes eye contact, gives pup a piece of food. Pup learns *fuss* means, look up at mom/dad, good things coming. Just don't use your right hand for this . . .
Power Healing?? LOL. I said to add power to your healing.
Richard:
It is a matter of semantics. My TD likes the word power more than focus. Focus to us is the dog looking in you direction. Power is the intensity he looks and heels with you. Again if the dog sees this as a correction than you are too hard or he is too soft. It should increase drive not lower it.
Only Ed can answer about the monthly specials but I doubt the latest one will. He shot over 50 hours of tape on 5 occasions. Driving up to 12 hours a shot. I don’t think he’s retiring off the revenue of this one. It is more his love of his work.
PS I like to separate the watch and the heel command. This way I can correct for a proper heel and lack of focus separately. My TD feels differently. He feels that lack of focus means the dog is heeling incorrectly. Who is he anyway. He has only 30+ years of experience. LOL.
I like *power healing* better than *power heeling*. Likely far more profitable as well.
I like imprinting baby pups on the attention building as a separate game as well, just passing along Al B's good info, too. Actually, what I like even better are pups who are attentive naturally . . .
