My dog is amazing. I love him. Most of you that have talked to me know that.
Koenig just let me do a full dental scaling on him. In my bathroom. With cuticle nippers. (I have dental scaling/prophy tools somewhere, but I can't find them for the life of me tonight!)
Who needs special tools or anesthesia? Marker training, I'm telling you, it's the way to go!!!
-side note- considering Koenig is only 2 years old, he's got surprisingly terrible teeth. A TON of plaque and tarter on the molars just below his saliva glands. He's got a pretty wet mouth for a Shepherd (he's prone to frothing when excited...lol), which can explain some of it, but I'm beginning to be concerned that I'm dealing with a dog that has genetically bad teeth. A couple have some decent wear for his age, part of which I attribute to the antlers I used to give him. (No longer- he's too aggressive of a chewer) I feed Orijen, TOTW, and raw once or twice a week(with the proper fasting between kibble and raw days, of course!) I can't wait till I have the space for a chest freezer- I'm really hopeful that a full-time raw diet will keep his teeth in tip top shape, with minimal wear.
Anyways- I'm super proud of my crazy brindle. Let me lay him down on the bathroom floor and dig around in his mouth. Rolled him over (all the way, with no resistance) and repeated it on the other side. To add to the abuse, I brushed his teeth afterwords.
(can he come over here and talk to my dogs? Just tell them that having their teeth checked is fun, not a game to see how many kisses they can give me) lol
ooo! You can give him a kiss on the nose for me now that his breath is nice and fresh.
Hahah, I'm also super lucky because Koenig rarely licks. I DO NOT like licky dogs, and he just came preprogramed not to lick. Cept' the folks at SchH, he lick the few that he really really really loves. I don't stop him. They can handle it. lol.
(and I love my dog too, Lisa! Please let is know if you're ever up in the NW WA area. Koenig loves to make new friends. Everyone we've met from LB is just fantastic)
I'd love to meet him - and you, of course.
I'm going to have to make an excuse to start traveling again so I can meet some you awesome people. I can't remember the last time I took time off and went anywhere.
You should post of video Kelly, I would love to see that. Yes, marker training is the way to go. Ofcourse you also have a very receptive, tuned-in dog.
I'll get a video tonight if I can Ram. He does not need it right now, but you're right, that would be a cool thing to get on video!! Great idea, thanks!
