my boy is 1-1/2 years old, 80#. fairly active-- every day at the least we do 30min to 1hr of fetch and some OB, but then 3-4x per week i take him to the forest preserve for an 8-mile run.
he eats Taste of the Wild. Feeding guidelines for his age/weight suggest right around 3.5 cups per day.
so we feed him between 1.5-2cups per meal, 2x per day. he eats about 1 cup and then quits. so he's been eating a total of about 2 cups per day.
is that normal? cause for concern? his energy level seems fine, he doesn't feel particularly bony... just seems unusual that he's eating so little.
Would he eat more if you added some canned food to it? I'm not one for trying to put weight on my dogs, but if he's not eating even the minimum, I would want to make sure there isnt something wrong. Has he been to the vet?
he does get some training treats during the day, but probably not enough to justify the 1-cup shortage on his normal eating.
this is the same dog that was just skipping meals for a while, which i called his sort of "teen angst" stage. i posted another thread about that a while back, he was just being picky and after missing a few meals he dove back in very quickly. he was eating normally again for a couple weeks but now has just kind of slowed down.
i've tried sprinkling some crushed up dried liver, he eats *faster* when i do that, but still stops after about a cup or so.
My boy, also about 80 lbs and around 1.5 years old, eats raw not kibble. But he is eating about 2.5 lbs a day. He also get about a cup of kibble at night when he goes in his crate.
Is it possible to split it into 3 meals & see if he eats more that way.
Have you ever considered feeding him a raw diet. Many dogs do better on raw then kibble. I feed raw, but that is not why I am saying this. Beside the usual benefits of feed raw for any dog....some kibble fed dogs, that are finiky eaters, eat much better & maintain appetites & weight better when raw fed.
Although I make my own raw diet, with the number of premade raw diets availabe, frozen & dehydrated, it is easy to feed a dog a raw diet easly.

To compare, Jethro is now 87# and eats about 2.5 lb. of raw a day. Usually in one meal. With about a 1/2 kibble treats during the day for training and when he goes in his crate. He ate less when I tried to feed him twice a day. He is always really hungry when his dinner time rolls around.
