The Board of Animal Health in Minnesota sends out notices to it's veterinarians,
just passing along info for forum viewers who might live up here.
7 days before its death, owners noticed their 6 mos old unvaccinated pup having trouble with stairs. The dog became paralysed in the hind limbs -- the owners took the dog to the clinic. Symptoms were incoordination and exaggerated
movements.
3 wks prior, the owners had noticed a skunk odor and a small cut on the pup's neck within the same time frame.
3 people are having post-rabies exposure prophylaxis--a second unvaccinated dog was euthanized. A vaccinated cat and dog were also on the farm.
My county is currently in rabies quarantine and this is probably the third time in two years. Needless to say I do not mess around with rabies or animals that have a high potential to carry rabies like skunks and bats.

Rabies is pretty much endemic in this area. They had two parking garages in downtown Sacramento posted with warning signs about the rabid skunks living there. And, in the adjoining county 2 people were receiving the rabies shot series after being bitten by rabid bats. It is certainly a disease not to be taken casually.
If you were in a high rick area or profession you probably would get a vac.
Cleaning the wound and immunization within a couple hours after a bite can prevent rabies and death.
is ther a human rabies vacine? I've only heard od people going through the series of shots given after being bitten by an animal that definitely has or may have rabies.
Of course the best prevenative for humans is to not try and handle wild or unknown domestic mammals at all.
