My 5 yr old, 13 lb. poodle has developed a problem that two vets can't figure out. She will drop one or two little fecal balls about the size of a large green pea almost every day. It happens when she jumps down from the furniture or barks or is just laying on the bed (where she no longer is welcome!) She doesn't seem to know what is happening. I've changed her food and see no difference. She goes out on the same schedule she always has.
It is very hard to ask someone to keep her when we go on vacation when you know they are going to have little brown balls show up on their carpet. HELP!

Just to clarify, you are certain that these balls are a sort of incontinence, or is it a possibility that it could be a small piece hanging in the fur from her last BM? I know that I need to check my long haired dogs for dangling surprises before they come back inside and many times there have been a small clump of poo to remove.
ETA: Welcome to the forum! Lots of fabulous info and people here

Out of curiousity, what foods have you tried feeding her, and what is she eating now?

I too would like to read the replies to Amy's and Ben's questions, and also what her normal poop is like. Is it balls, or is it good formed logs?

Poop incontinence is a great way to describe it. They are not "dangles" left over. They are fresh, soft and warm when I find them immediately after deposit. We have "dangles" sometimes when she is in need of a hair cut, but this is totally different.
Her normal bowl movement is usually about three "logs." These balls seem to be something that was left over and didn't quite make it out, or they are the beginning of the next movement that her anil muscle couldn't hold in. They are a complete surprise to her.
Thanks for the welcome. I did not know of the existance of this forum until I told my pet store owner about her problem and he suggested I sign up. I sure hope someone out there has an answer.

Because of alergies I have been feeding her Natural Balance fish and sweet potato. This has help with her scratching. However, after reading on this web site about raw diets and wanting to experiment a bit, I have given her some different things, often table scraps or canned tuna, just to see if there was any difference. Nope. Nothing has changed except she does love tuna. Also, there has been no change in the scratching, so maybe that is inviromental.

You'll want another thread for this. Also, you are correct that just about all other allergies are far more common than food in dogs.
#1 by far is flea hypersensitivity, and we've been seeing widespread resistant fleas since (in my recollection) about 2009. #2 is environmental/inhalant.
When you start a new thread, you want to identify in detail where the itch is on the body (backbone, base of tail, shins, face, etc.) and how the insides of the ears look.

I'm moving this post from above my allergy reply to get us back on "poop track."
When in relation to the log poops do these happen? Immediately after? Soon after? Hours later?
Are the logs firm or very soft?
How soft are the balls?
(Sorry about the detail ... I don't know if you're used to it, but don't worry: the regular posters are. If there is poop in the title, then poop is going to be discussed graphically. )
BTW, this is not at all uncommon in older dogs (usually older than five, but certainly not unheard of at five). That sphincter loses elasticity like many other muscles, etc.
I'm asking all these questions to see if maybe the texture/formation would benefit from modification of diet.
Also, the timing question is so we can maybe identify a time when an extra poop outside (with walking to stimulate peristalsis) at a predictable time will help.

I haven't seen a flea in ages. I have been using Frontline or one of the like brands. Her problem is seasonal and involves a lot of rear end chewing around tail and back legs/hips. Licking her front paws is an ongoing thing that she will stop when I tell her to.
I may start a new thread about this, but right now the poop ball problem is the biggest problem.
