I got in trouble this a.m. because I had not done my homework and made my dog "watch me" since last weekend.
My trainer/helper gave me some advice and it works some of the time..but not all of the time.
I am weary of spitting weiners as my dog is 18 mths. old. He wants me to use a ball and whenever she looks at me and holds the look, toss her the ball.
I trust him and think he is very good, but wondered if there are any other tricks to this as well?
I am not looking for a shortcut and am in this for the long haul....but thought perhaps, you may have some other 'tricks' for me to try as well???!!!
To watch some of the seasoned dogs watch..is nothing short of BEAUTIFUL.
Are you still in the stationary teaching phase right now then or?
If so, the way I teach "watch me" is by getting you pups attention with a treat, then lifting the treat to your face as you give the command, "watch me". Hold the treat and gaze for a few seconds then praise and give him the treat. Repeat 1000x. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Once he's good at this, say "watch me" and lift the treat to your face (as before) then as you are holding the gaze (as practiced) move your hand with the treat behind your back for a quick second then back to your face. Praise and treat. Then slowly lenthen the time your hand stays behind your back.
If you prefer not to use treats, you can do the exact same thing with a ball or toy that he likes. Or you can try tugging gently on the leash as you say "watch me". Keep tugging until he looks at you. The moment he does, immediately stop and praise.
The Flinks tape on Building Drive and Focus uses a ball on a string and the technique works well as well as stimulating drive in the dog. It takes some practice to get the movement right, but once you get the dog properly focused on the ball it doesnt take long for the dog to start to focus on your face.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
Obedience is great...except what is obedience if the dog never watches. So we are starting from scratch I guess. If I say "watch me"...she does...but does not hold the gaze. I will do with a ball now as she has, as he says "incredible drive'.
