Well we've had sweetpea for about 2 weeks. She is doing good with crate training, not 1 accident (knock on wood) she will go right to door when she needs to go out but she will not bark to go out just sit by door.
The problem lately is she been barking at us alot lately and nipping. We tried to ignore also say "no bark" and put her in her crate til she calms down. Doesn't work. At first it was just my 12 year old son she would bark at but now my wife and I also.
Put it on a cue word so that you don't have the problem another poster had where he dog doesn't bark at ALL! After you've got her barking on command, you can extinguish it fairly easily marking her quiet moments and teaching the quiet on cue.
I don't know if she's barking from frustration or she's learned you'll play with her when she barks, whatever it may be, I think you just need to have a plan about what you want her to do everytime you bring her out of the crate.
Be prepared with the toy or food just like you are with the potty training. Spend your time showing her what you want, not always trying to stop something.A structured routine where its clear to her what you want. Not really formal obedience, more just good interaction with you. (engagement ) I think putting her in the crate to settle down is fine, just don't start making it a punishment.
My wife and I are in disagreement on obedience training. I want to train at home, buy training info here like puppies 8weeks to 8 months and she wants to do the pet store training. What do you think?
I would avoid the pet store, but if your wife is more comfortable working with someone instead of doing things on her own, look for a good trainer for her.
"Marker training (also called clicker training) is one of the most profound systems of training dogs that I have seen in my 50 years of owning, breeding and training working dogs. In reality this is a training system that is not that difficult to learn. In it's most basic form it's a method of communication that is very very clear for the dog. Dogs learn the marker language quickly and when they do they thrive in the training. The marker system produces dogs that love to train. I had been training dogs for almost 45 years when I started to learn this system. I felt like a kid in a candy store when I saw how well it worked and the attitude of my dogs that were being trained with markers. ... "
