Irony…” (a condition in which one seems to be mocked by fate or the facts&rdquo
Starting yesterday Pisa has been holding her tail weird, usually its curved upwards almost in a “C” shape, and it wags when she’s happy, and especially while tugging. She is holding it down,at about 3 inch away from her body making it appear limp, no more waging, a sudden interest to chew at it, and will try to put her teeth on my hand when I hold it.
I looked up cold tail and found some of the following…….
Appearance
Typically the presentation is a young adult dog with an acutely flaccid tail that hangs down from the tail base or is held horizontally for 3-4 inches and then drops down.(dog on right) The tail remains in this position even when the dog moves about.
Treatment
Recommended treatment is rest and sometimes anti-inflammatory drugs. Recovery can take a day to a couple weeks. The symptoms may recur later on.
The current hypothesis is that cold tail is the result of a muscle contraction or spasm.....................
What treatment methods would be best? She will be getting fixed soon, and that would be when it could be cropped, but I would rather not.
rest will be tough, she gets pretty nutty the few days I spend less than 4hrs working her(proper exercise through out the day and lots of brain work)
She gets lots of time in the house, and typically is only crated at night, and from 10am till just after lunch, and again in the evening from about 8pm till 9ish.
Usually they are all better in a few days. Once they have had it once, they often seem to be more prone to getting it again. If it is really bothering the dog, you could give Metacam or something, but giving it doesn't seem to shorten the duration.
In the dockdogs world, it is rumored that supplementing with salmon oil helps prevent cold tail. Mine have always gotten salmon oil several times a week, and none of my current pack has had cold tail, but not quite a controlled scientific study LOL
