Last year I bought a copy of a British dog magazine to read while I was travelling visiting family in England. I came across the magazine yesterday and enjoyed flipping through the articles again. One of them caught my eye with a view to the warmer weather just around the corner, called "Ten Places to go with your Dog!"
Here is the list.
- On the beach
- Hit the history Trail
- Take to the water
- Out for a meal
- Attend a show
- Picnic site
- Special events
- Back to training classes
- Woodland walk
- Long distance hike
I know that I have a few more to add to the list and wondered if others on the webboard had as well. Maybe we could get 100 places to go?

-Dog show/trial
-The dog park (J/K!!!!)
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog. |

Definitely ditto the camping! We've camped with our dogs in a pickup camper and later in a fifth wheel trailer.
Along the hiking idea, while camping, we have taken our dogs for long walks among the red rocks of Sedona, Arizona; along the beaches of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the Gulf of Mexico, as well as most of the Great Lakes, and Lake Tahoe; hiking around the perimeter of Devil's Tower in Wyoming -- dogs no longer allowed there, though -- walking the dunes in northern Michigan; and one unforgettable climb up a fire tower in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The stairway was fully enclosed, so no danger of the dog falling. She had a blast.
Also, how about a nice long ride in the car, if that's something your dog enjoys (and if you can afford the gas).
Oh, yeah, and a trip to the Dairy Queen is a special treat for everyone, human and canine alike!

Camping is a definite yes Also, going through Bear Country in the Black Hills is a fun adventure with your dog. Exposure to interesting wildlife all from the safety of your car The Hills are really quite dog friendly compared to other places we have travelled.

We are really luck to have a small, but very fun cabin in Northern Michigan. For my city dogs, having 2.5 acres of half forest, half field to play on is awesome. In that area, we have visited several state parks...my dogs have played in rivers/lakes, been canoeing, etc. They are also seasoned travelers who ride well in my van.
One of the best places they have gone is Mackinaw City, which is extremely dog friendly.
This summer, we are renting cabins in NW Michigan and going to Sleeping Bear Dunes and around that area...dogs with us of course.
Have also taken them to Kentucky...but we had a motor home at that time and that was wonderful!
Here we are at Fort Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City (this was taken with us walking the lookout tower area, way up in the air):

Fun thread, has got me thinking about the lazy, hazy dayz of summer.
Along with canoeing, there's speed boating. If you've got a sharp enough pup, they make great spotters. Up goes the skier, motoring along peacefully...spaloooosh...woof, woof, woof, let's go get him, let's go get him.
For the real schmoozy ones, there's yachting.
Running around on a Jet Ski.
Can't forget biking and skijoring.
And then there's zip lining. Still gotta look into that one.
And helicopters and airplanes - not unusual for the SAR dogs or frequent travelers.
Riding shotgun with trucker hubby for the day.
Out horseback riding, enjoying the trails alongside the horses
I really like the idea of taking them out to a show or a fine dining restaurant. Not in any towns around here but maybe somewhere. A drive in movie would work, if they still have those.

Still have a few drive in movie places here in Maine.
With permission you can take your dog into a hospital (doesn't have to be a therapy dog, just has to be well behaved, and pass an interview).
Along the same lines you can take your well behaved dog to childrens centers, with permission of course.
You can take your dog to road racing events (5k, 10k runs etc.) A friend of mine would do the road races with her dog as an official runner, number and all. Not a big race, just local stuff.
If your lucky to live in the right area you can go island hopping in a 2 person kayak, doggy in the back seat.
You can volunteer at doggy adoption events and take your pup with you.
Enter your pup into a fashion contest. (Yes, we have one up here once in a while.)
Some county fairs allow dogs.
I've heard of dogs going spelunking, not my cup of tea but an option.
I guess if your innovative enough, and have the cash to burn.

Careful about those beaches. Sand, bare feet and dog crap is a combination that could get you in bad favor with the regular beach goers.
old dogs LOVE to learn new tricks |
