I think a video would be a good thing for this. I would read books, but I've had trouble finding them.
I think even though this is something that can be done wrong, still most people who aren't going to do it right or be responsible will still do it. That crowd always exists.
I think it would benefit people because it will help put the right info out there, AND it will show people what to expect when watching someone whose a trainer showing you with your dog. It would be a good reference I think.
Does anyone on the board think this could be a good idea, what does Ed think?
Well I will say that I'd rather see someone watch a well made video by someone reputable on ecollars, rather than read a instruction booklet and start zapping away. If you can't have someone who knows what they are doing show you the way than I guess a good video is the next best thing.
I haven't used an e-collar in protection work BUT, used both tri-tronics and later dogtra with retrievers and pointers.
J and P Dobbs along with Alice Woodyard wrote Tri Tronics Retriever training and though it is a different sport a lot of the informatin especially Tri Tronics "three step introduction" would be very helpful.
The manufactuers usually have something like that, Tritronic put one out. I remeber the emphasis being on field work. You might be able to apply the theory to different exercises. just a thought.

I've been telling Ed we need to do a video directed at protection work with the collar.
Ed has a bunch on his plate alreaady though.
I've been fortunate enough to sorta grow up with the e-collar, there is some really interesting things happening right now with the new collars out there and better technology. It gives a lot more flexability then it used to.
Hello Discussion List Members!!! This is my first post and I'm a little new to this format, but we'll see how it goes. My input here comes from a slightly different angle,,,, I will be reviewing a possible case of animal abuse involving over use, or inconsistent use of an electric collar (I am an animal control officer). I, personally, have never read on how to use this equipment. I have competed in AKC obedience and AKC and AHBA herding. I have seen responsible trainers using e-collars in herding, my herding trainer was against it. She is very successful at a national level and international level. So, I also shied away from e-collars. Now I will have to analyze someone's use or abuse of this training tool. My initial reaction is that using this collar on a golden retriever, or lab type (so the intial report goes) over ten times per training session while attempting to correct heal off leash is over use/inconsistent use. The owner draws attention, because the dog is yelping so loud each time the correction is activated. Any quick courses out there? Susan
