Sarah, my sister, just recently was given a very poorly taken care of pup. It is a Chihuahua mix of some sort. She was skin and bones and her ears were flopped forward for 2 days, but when given water they came up (I took her to the vet in Monterrey and she was given an antibiotic and wormed).
After they were up for 3 or 4 days one ear flopped backwards and I have tried taping it for a few days but it is good for 1 day than returns to the previous state.
Should I try taping it longer? What is causing this, any ideas? She is around 3-5 months old.
Some breeds dont necessarily require the ears to come up all the way. Ive seen alot of chihuahuas that are half lop eared (though technically they are not supposed to) and depending on what its mixed with, just may not be in the genetics for that dog. Can you tell what its mixed with?
No she looks like a chihuahua to me. They did say the mother had ears like that too however it could be that the mother is also dehydrated. It is just the one ear,the other one is perfect. Also if it was not clear from the other post- the ear is flopping backwards not forwards and I have never seen a chihuahua like that.
Shortly after we got her a small child came up and yanked on one ear to the point of yelping but we are unsure if it was the same ear and if that could even cause that.
If the ear carriage is unsightly I'd tape it -- Usually a week or so will do wonders.
Some folks use super glue, but you can't do that unless there is a lot of hair.
I've seen chihuahuas with ears back, the interior of the ear exposed.
Well I taped it again this time with an ear plug to give more structure. I will leave it this time for a week to see if that will fix it. I wouldn't mind it if it was forward, it just looks weird.

Keep an eye/nose on the ear plug. It's way to easy to create an infection when you block off the air to the ear.

and yes..a child yanking on an ear can cause damage and prevent it from standing the way it should.
