I read this article today about an agressive Hybrid sentenced to life patrolling a prison. Found it interesting, so I'm soliciting thoughts here. I'm wondering if they rely on the primal, under-socialized aspect.
Any thoughts?
The fact that the "dog" ate oatmeal every morning had me shaking my head a bit.

Angola does excellent community work in this area. For years, Burl Cain has proven himself to be a savvy enforcement official, and his innovative thinking has saved the taxpayers millions, while providing services to the surrounding area. It sounds like they already have a program in place that will be beneficial to Chief, and he will be spared.
I may be off-base here, but I think the former owner is clueless. IMHO, it's people like that who get dogs killed. Unfortunately, there's nothing to stop her from getting another. Didn't the judge make it clear to her that she wasn't getting Chief back? The worst part is she has no idea what she did wrong, and that it's her fault that Chief was almost put down.

There's always three sides to every story, in this case there's the dog owners side, the so called terrorized peoples side and the truth, but we won't get the truth the dog can't speak.
Amy it could have been grain free oatmeal lol.
I'm interested to know what they thought being terrorized was and there was no mention of someone getting bit.

IF it has any wolf in it, its not much...I get sick of these so-called hybrids that are really just part of the owners ego. Looks like a malamute, shepherd mix. Very pointy ears.
The owner is an idiot...stupidity and misinformation. The terrorized people probably aren't much better. And I'm a hater LOL.

I just don't know what to say. I feel terrible for the animal, I think the owner needs a good kick to the teeth for allowing this to happen to her dog, and I'm shocked and appalled to learn that Angola has a breeding operation for mutts that is funded on tax payer money.
I really shouldn't have read that story.

I respectfully disagree about the taxpayer funding. Most of the programs at Angola are funded by other programs operated by the inmates, and income from the rodeo and their agricultural services. In a lot of ways, they actually save the taxpayers money. Burl Cain and his facility have always been upstanding citizens, and Angola has an excellent track record for a federal pen.

Duane, I found your posts to be very insightful! Thank you.
Samantha, regarding the taxes, I did some more research and found that the program was implemented after recieving a funding cut that eliminated many of the guard positions. I feel that they were pretty innovative to come up with a solution to still keep the perimeter safe while keeping costs low. Also, it seems that these animals are handled and trained and not isolated as I had imagined.
Chief suffered from a stupid owner, so hopefully, if nothing else, he will at least be recieving better nutrition and a more secure environment. I thinks it's better than the alternative.

Although we might feel that the complaitants are whiners and the dog may not have caused damages, it is our responsibility as dog owners to maintain control of our animals and adhere to all ordinances pertaining to us. The article states that the dog had escaped his confines more than once. If that occurs and people are scared of him, they have a right to make a report. If you love your pets, you owe it to them to protect them from such liability.

I briefly considered searching for info if it's tax money funded, but decided that I disliked the story so much that I'd rather not ruin my morning by finding out more bad news. I'm glad to hear that their program is funded by other means, even if I am still wholly against breeding mutts.

This is a ridiculous concept in my view.
