I'd like to take a moment to salute the veterans that can not be with us this Holiday weekend and wish God's blessing on their families.
...I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.
I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom....

Thank you, Dennis.
Lincoln's Bixby letter of course came into being during the Civil War that this holiday was created for/by/about.
One of the most famous poems came from WWI:

It's always hard to read. It's so evocative.

I'd like to join in and say thank you to all the men and women who have made it possible for us to live in a free country and who have in the past and continue this day to encourage freedom and democracy worldwide. Your sacrifices will not be forgotten.

We shall meet but we shall miss him.
There will be one vacant chair.
We shall linger to caress him,
While we breathe our ev'ning prayer.
When a year ago we gathered,
Joy was in his mild blue eye.
But a golden cord is severed.
And our hopes in ruin lie.
We shall meet, but we shall miss him.
There will be one vacant chair.
We shall linger to caress him,
While we breathe our ev'ning prayer.
At our fireside, sad and lonely,
Often will the bosom swell,
At remembrance of the story,
How our noble Willie fell.
How he strove to bear our banner,
Thro' the thickest of the fight,
And uphold our country's honor
In the strength of manhood's might.
True they tell us wreaths of glory,
Evermore will deck his brow,
But this soothes the anguish only,
Sweeping o'er our heartstrings now.
Sleep today o' early fallen,
In thy green and narrow bed.
Dirges from the pine and cypress
Mingle with the tears we shed.

"The Vacant Chair," from the Civil War.
I wish I had the author's name, to credit him or her.

Today is a day to honor those who have fought and lost their lives for our freedom today. Today is also a day to remember The Constitution (what they have fought for) and what duty we have as citizens to protect this ourselves by staying informed (not by the media) and voting....all to ensure we still have something to fight for.
THAT is the best way to honor all of these people who have died for our country.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog. |

Here's to my brothers that asked so little and gave so much.
My their families remember them with smiles and not tears.
Christopher, Jacob, Lee, Brian, Brandon, Oscar, Arkell; I love and miss you my Wardog brothers.

I thanked all veterans, past and present, yesterday as I was at my GSD breeder's kennel. We were BBQ'ing, playing with puppies, all her other dogs and enjoying everyone's company. I thought that would not be possible without everything our service men and women have done for us. It was a great day.
