Just curiosity:
I have noticed the Michael Ellis videos have young people in the classes.
Does anyone over 55 get a GSD puppy to train etc.?

I have known many 55 & older that get GSD's as pups, most are(have been) life long GSD enthusiasts.

Thanks Bob~
I really needed to hear that! Someone I know(not well) told me I was crazy to adopt a puppy at my age(60). I got my first GSD at 49 and he died last December.
I couldn't stand being without one!

My younger pup, Ziva, I got 2 years ago, when I was already collecting Social Security and on Medicare. Baloney to the naysayers. If you go into the AKC Obedience Ring you really don't see too many younger people involved in the sport.
Caro, as long as you have provisions for the pup in case you are temporarily sick, etc., Go get that pup !!

Why not? I say go for it as long as you know you can provide what the dog needs in some way or another.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog. |

Thanks for your reply Marj,
I got him in March, he will be 6mo. at the end of June. See my signature!
I am (thank God) in good health and shape. But I did have to find out about alternatives just in case.
I guess I was curious how many here were in my age bracket. Looks like I am not alone!!

I feel that the decision to acquire a dog (or puppy) of a certain breed, an energetic, high-drive dog, a big dog, a dog with special needs, or you name it, depends less on your age and much more on your health, energy level, and commitment to meet the dog's needs. We have all met 70-somethings that could run circles around the average 40-something.
Regardless of our age, I feel it is very important to have plans in place for the continuing care of our dogs if we should become sick, disabled, or die. Don't just assume that one of your friends or family will take them. Talk to the people you have in mind about it. Don't let your dog end up in the dog pound. Ask anyone who works in rescue if this happens. It does, too often.

This is the real biggy, IMO.

Ask me. It happens ALL THE TIME. A beloved dog loses his owner and at the same time ends up completely bewildered in a cell in a shelter with strangers who might or might not have 10 minutes to walk him ... and the most frequent exit from a shelter for an adult dog is with the aid of a needle.

I worked on the fire department for a long time. One of the saddest things is when we made a call where someone died and the family is standing around looking at the dog and saying "who is going to take him?"
I am trying so hard to get my MOm to make plans for her dog. A 3 yo old shih-tzu. Mom is 75 and I hope she outlives the dog but there needs to be a plan. I know what will happen if there isn't one. My very non-dog sister will insist on taking him because he belonged to MOm, or I will have to bring him home and have to train him and rehome him while trying to figure out how to have him live in our house with a 105 lb dog, and he likes to mark strange people's houses. My next trip home to visit, that is going to be a very big and persistent part of the conversation.
And you go girl! (Carol) Best of times with him! Julie
