So, I've accepted the occasional "really happy dreams" Gambit has, the result of which is frantic washing of his pillow or a quick wipe of the floor.
However tonight Gambit (intact male) literally, humped and "tied" with the air for about an hour. He was asleep when it started. I ended up just sitting there holding him over a bucket since he was waddling around soaking my floor (ew...so much ew)
This can NOT be normal right? I mean it was literally like he tied with an invisible female and just sort of waddling around ears back and panting everything out for almost an hour soaking the floor.... I did check to be sure that the fluids weren't urine, they're 100% not.
He's fine now, back asleep...more exhausted.
He's not been especially studdy lately (he's not very studdy in general...occassional urine licking if he thinks I'm not paying attention and he'll try to be sneaky at the trails and mark if I don't stay on top of him) and no exposure to intact females, our closest neighbors have a 10 year old spayed female so I'm pretty sure she didn't bring this on, he hasn't been around any females in heat....we honestly don't have any other neighbors, and the next closest thing I'd call neighbors don't have any dogs. We have coyotes but they're seasonal (Jan-March) so I double he's smelling that and it's unlikely he'd respond to that anyway. What exactly would cause this? What should I ask the vet to check for? Is a vet even needed?

THe thing to watch for is if his erection gets "stuck" frequently, pirapism is the name for it.
The erection is designed to be inside the female while locked, and therefore protected. The surface of the penis is highly fragile, can become injured easily, bleed, etc. This is not a happy sensation for the dog, they are vulnerable in this state and know it.
Pulling the foreskin back over the bulbs of the penis will allow the blood to flow back out of the distal end and the erection to subside. Some dogs have a narrow opening at the tip of the penis which seems to make this happen more often, i.e. the foreskin gets "caught back" and then the tie occurs.
Likely he'll outgrow this as his adolescence blends into adulthood.
He could be castrated if it's a recurring issue. Before doing that, perhaps consider
some Panalog or some other cortizone/antibiotic mild ointment applied inside the sheath at the tip--maybe he's got a little local infection which has produced swelling, thickening, narrowing of the ring, the opening at the tip of the foreskin. I knew a breeding bulldog that had real trouble with this---it can become an emergency "if the erection lasts more than 4 hrs see your doctor etc.!" that blue look you see on the penis in this situation=no blood flow--we tried dilation of the end --- but eventually the dog was castrated.

After looking at your signature pic, I am not even going to comment.
But on the serious side, he's very young so that age can be esp difficult in that way. Logan mostly does stuff like this in his kennel thank goodness. I can imagine holding a bucket under him would be the last thing I would want to do.
I knew a lady who would wake up to her yorkie licking (he slept on the bed, EW) and when she saw she what was going on she held him under cold water...literally he got a cold shower. Poor dog, I would hate to be her kid. But in the case of emergency would that work Betty?

Betty, my memory is vague, but haven't I also read that frequent painful erections are not just a possible result but also a cause of so much humping and ejaculating?

I have definitely read about the "real emergency" aspect. :-(

My last dog was intact (never bred, I was told to never put him under anesthesia) and he never really experienced this but when he was 11 or 12 he did seem to have a dream where he was um...having an R rated one. Putting sugar on the wiggly can help with Priaprism, it causes vasodilation to the area.

Tresa,
Ramsey (6months+) has begun to become amorous with one of his toys. No completion, just movement. He seems to stop when he is getting nowhere. I removed the toy when he wasn't around.
I try to give him plenty of exercise. He is a mellow fellow who actually loves to sleep.
Does this eventually go away? Should I make sure he has no toys that are soft?

LOL now that I have my dorky perv dog I'm going to have to find a new sig picture...it's only fun when it's not true XD
He didn't seem like he was in any actual pain (he looked a little uncomfortable towards the end...but considering he was waddling around for an hour I'm not sure if that's that weird). When he was "done" he turned around and put himself back where everything was supposed to go (I didn't even think to try to flip his sheath back over a anything...admittedly doing anything but grabbing a bucket and cleaning supplies didn't occur to me). The extent of my "treatment" was a quick google search to insure it wasn't the sign of dog killer disease-itis.
He's not a humper at ALL really. He'll occassionally try to mount that one dog at the trails that all dogs try to mount (usually a lab...) but he's got a solid off command. He's never been bred. He's intact because there's not reason for him not to be at this point.
His normal "very happy dreams" nothing comes out of the sheath though, it's momentary, he'll just sort of grunt and usually my disgruntled snarl as I reach for the wet wipes wakes him up and he'll move to his crate to clean himself up. Ryuk used to get these as well...at this point I figured they were normal....Ryuk used to "ask" me to turn on the tub and he'd jump into the cold water and lay down....Gambit still thinks the tub is actually a torture device so that's not an option...

This is how I look at it. For one thing he may be entering puberty, just like with us humans it can be more overwhelming, yikes remember those days? So, the worst part is from the onset until maturity. Another thing is sex drive in each dog is variable like the prey drive or food drive. I think dogs with higher prey drive have higher sex drive in general.
Anyway, what I would do starting now...is redirect inappropriate humping of toys and relocate him or engage him in something else every time, only leave him unsupervised where its safe if he does it. You don't want him to do that in front your guests. I had a chow mix named Sport. She would hump people, stuffed animals or blankets...she didn't outgrow it either. I had to keep one stuffed GSD out of reach at all times. That's worst case scenario though!
So, you can't just take the drive out (unless you neuter them). Instead its like teaching them "don't play tug with pillows on the couch, that's inappropriate or don't counter surf, you eat when/where I feed you"
