My sister's 85# pit bull is deathly traumatized by fireworks. Since they're legal in most neighborhoods outside of the City of Houston, people started shooting them off DAYS before the 4th.
Slayte would literally try to become a lap dog, shaking, drooling, pacing, following us from room to room, etc. Miserable.
Someone suggested my sis get him a DAP collar. Almost INSTANTLY he was calmer. By the 4th, when ALL the fireworks were going off, some right outside the house!, he was calmly sleeping on the couch and never even lifted his head.
I would recommend them highly, although I know all dogs are different.
I also second the DAP collar. I've also had dogs respond well to the spray on their blankets and the plug in diffuser in the central part of the house.
Thanks for the input, Deb and Samantha! I was thinking about getting one for Caterina- she's terrified of thunderstorms- but I hadn't heard much about them.
I suggest getting her used to the collar BEFORE a thunder storm. Allowing her to wear it during calm periods of the day, like when she's getting brushed or relaxing after a good exercise. A dog behaviorist on another forum did this and she had great results, since the dog associated the collar with calm, happy times.
