I make my dogs 'forager toys' out of empty water bottles with a few holes cut in them. I use uber-quality kitty kibble for the 'treats' and they love them.
Today I was 'putering and heard the bottle being rolled across the floor. Since no dogs are in the house at the time, I had to go look and see. The CAT is using the bottle to eat all the uber-quality kitten food!!
Who'd of thunk it. We haven't had a cat for many years but if we ever get another, they're getting a treat ball too.
And what a great idea!! Love the manufactured treat balls and don't have to mention how much the boys enjoy them. They provide a lot of entertainment around here. But they also love the crackling or crunching or whatever than noise is the water bottles make.
Never thought about poking holes in one and filling it with treats. Any issues with sharp edges? Do you have a trick to how you make the holes in it?
Just whatever works for cutting the holes. I usually use a utility knife. Just be VERY VERY careful!! I cut about 3 holes in various places just a wee bit bigger than the kibble pieces. I have small dogs so the regular size water bottles work fine; if you have bigger dogs you could even go to the liter size I guess.
No problems with sharp edges and if the kibble comes out too fast just duct-tape over a hole or two. Cheap and effective.
I also take the empty bottles and remove the lid and throw out in the yard for cheap play toys. When they're totally 'crunched' up, I throw away and replace!
I am making my Fatty-McFatterson kitty a treat bottle this afternoon. thanks for the idea! Skinny boy will like one too but he loves beating up toys anyhow, it's the chubby girl that needs motivation.
I am making Logan an ice toy by putting some water in a Chinese soup container with bits of food, freeze it then add a layer of chicken broth, freeze that, then another layer of water and food. Yucky sounding but perfect for the 115* weather lately.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
