Also known as how to really ruin some poor idiot's day (even though he totally deserved it)
Step 1: Go for walk down town with dogs
Step 2: Wait for person behind you to be be mugged by desperate idiot (this is the "Potential New Friend")
Step 3: Have Potential New Friend attempt to run by you and in the process knock you over and club your puppy on the back of the head with stolen bag, bonus points for him going "AuuuuRG MOVE IT" and waving the bag around as he does this. In the process trip and fall over your dog who was just hit into your knees. This potential friend running by is now your dog's new friend! We'll call him "Mr. Friend"
Step 4: Attempt to untangle yourself from trash can and watch in horror as your dog recognizes the similar body language that the "friend" with the bite pillow at the club to his new friend here on the street! Your dog will now seal this friendship by latching on to the only thing that looks like something he's supposed to bite.... the bag Mr. Friend was holding...
Step 5: Scream at Mr. Friend to stop yelling and drop the bag and watch as your "out" command fails to work because this is the first time you've had to use it when the "decoy" has continued to yell and pull at the "bite pillow" after the command was given....also, "out" command lacks presence when you're yelling it while wrestling stupid attacking trashbin and screaming at other dog to stay in downstay (which, props to Ryuk, he did...while screaming and barking in protest)....
Step 6: Watch as your dog, clearly under the impression this is the most fun training session ever, yanks bag and knocks Mr. Friend off balance and with a final shake wins the bag and joyfully circles around you just like he does when he wins the pillow or sleeve -_-
Step 7: Watch Mr. Friend, defeated, run off....
Overall eventful outing....the guy did get nabbed by a unmarked police car down the road. Lady got her bag back a bit drooly with two lines of molar indents but they should pop right out and he didn't chew it so it's clean. It was otherwise undamaged. She bought Gambit a thank you gift at the pet store...at lot of them actually, he's now gleefully crunching away at cow trachea. We may get called as a witness to the theft but Gambit is completely in the clear, he didn't bite anything but the bag and has a street full of witnesses to back him up who gave statements.

The most strange, interesting, ironic weird shit just happens to you and your dogs! Just don't ever think "now what".
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog. |

Just another "fun" training issue we have to work on -_-
I've got a "scary" male friend that Gambit's never met coming out tommorrow so we can replicate this at home and work on the PROPER response...which would be keep your jaws off of everything until I say other wise.
We're actually using the bite pillow, going to work on passive loose leash walking with him running by and taunting him with the pillow. I've actually set up similar things to this before when I was childproofing him (kids waving around toys, sleeves, tugs, etc and running around)....it didn't occur to me that I'd have to adress it with adults but it makes PERFECT sense....he's used to seeing large men as the ones holding things to bite and this guy shoved us and was yelling, he must have looked JUST like the type Gambit sees as fun and the bag was right there -_- still though AUUUUGH I just want to work on fun stupid tricks, I don't want to do desensitizing *whine whine whine*

Oh, Jamie, thank you for making my day! Yours is the most fun post I have read here in a very long time LOL. Okay, never mind Gambit's taking things into his own hands and failing to respond to commands. Let's just say he was in Good Samaritan mode!
As a court reporter/legal transcriber, I hope you do get to testify. I would love to listen to a story like that for a change instead of the same-ol' same-ol'.

Isn't great how every day offers another training opportunity? He may have failed in discipline and obedience this time around but I think it's cooler than heck how Gambit foiled a crime. I realize this could have turned out much worse and am glad no one got hurt. Kudos to you for turning it into a training exercise.

The way it worked out, the other lady is glad Gambit didn't out the bag! When you're practicing with the new Mr. Friend, also work on staying calm while Gambit takes the bag, and remembering not to give the out until Mr. Friend has surrendered the bag and left the building.
I'd also seriously consider arming myself for walks!!
JK, of course...
