I have 2 dogs I want to do carting with and I am going to buy an regal mini sulky and from what I have read if I use weights with me not on the seat it will be balanced with no weight on the dog. My dogs are only 15 months old and wanted to know if it was ok to have them hooked to the sulkie this way to keep training them at this age. I know you should not put weight on them when they are growing. Just wanted to know from someone who knows carting better to me. Thanks Dillon
dillon , i have a friend who has a greater swiss mountain dog that he would like to cart with . . . can you point me in the direction of some good info ?
If it's the same dogs he posted about a few months ago, they're Cane Corsos. He was looking for activities to do with them.
Sounds like you're onto something, Dillon...
Wow duane was right I was talking about my cane corsos! Ian there is good onfo on here you just have to go back and read them. Travel at the spees of dog is a good book.
I don't cart with my dogs, but I do cart with my horses and pony. I can't imagin that a little bitty sulkey is going to put very much weight on the dogs' backs. You could put a bathroom scales on a chair and set the shafts on it to see how many pounds it is.
If you do add weight to the empty sulkey to balance the shafts add it as far to the back as possible if you want to minimise the weight the dog is pulling. For my pony cart I use an old iron window weight wired to the dash, it's compact and heavy. Salt or sand in a bag would probably work as well.
Well its not going very well because I thought I knew what I was gonna buy. Then I found out the business that makes the sulky I wanted and the business that makes the harness for that sulky are both ending there businesses the end of this year. For everything I was gonna get it would be around 5,000 dollars. I don't know if I want to spend all that and not ever have any support for the products. Now I don't know what to do.
I use a converted garden cart to cart with my older dog (and it needs new tires :P). I wish, wish, wish for a sulky someday. I love carting with my dog. Everything I have read says you can start young so long as you don't put any weight or stress on the dog's joints. For a large breed, they recommend being 2 years before you add any significant weight. The sulkies are nice because they do minimize the weight the dog is pulling (and they look so very cool).
