I've heard you're not supposed to go jogging with your dog until 12 months, but is it Ok to start biking with them at this age as well? He's a week shy of a year and at the moment we walk between 5-8 kms a day plus swimming twice a week so he's not in bad condition can i start biking as long as we build up slowly?

Brad I am pretty sure its an impact issue running or jogging the young dog, like the swimming is excellent low-no impact but plenty of exercise, I would consider the jogging and biking in the same category cause there is not much difference physically for the dog. So "IF" your clear for running/jogging then you should be fine for biking but like you said ease into cause its much easier for you on the bike than the dog, and you don't want to over do it. Good luck
Might depend a bit on the dog (breed, weight, build), and where you are doing the biking. At 12 months I wouldn't run a leashed dog on pavement, when biking. I would, however, run a year old dog off lead while mountain biking, keeping the distance at around 3 miles (5 km) maximum. You tend to move more slowly on a mountain bike (dog walking pace on uphills, faster on downhills), and if the dog is off leash, he's more likely to do a more dog-natural type of sprint/rest activity, and also be running on a softer surface.
Do be very mindful of the dog's paws and over-heating. My impression is that western australia is very hot and dry (outback).
Not quite outback around Perth but it is very hot especially at the moment! They're Amstaffs all in reasonable condition, this is probably the fattest guy I have at the moment
His sister's much fitter and energetic and the older guys 15 months and loves to run but not far yet!
