One of the owners of my G litter pups called tonight. She had bought the dog as a companion and wanted to try schutzhund with her. Pup is young yet, less then a year old but is doing very well at the local Schutzhund club and has fit into life with the owner and her young daughter like they were made for each other.
The owner called me tonight to tell me that the dog had basically alerted by barking right before her daughter had a seizure and then laid calmly over her daughter during the seizure. No training and mom was pretty much surprised and very happy.
I understand that a dog's ability to sense an on coming seizure is just something they have or don't have, it can't be trained but I'm kind of amazed at how this pup (ANNABELLE SPAWN) seemed to of known instinctively how to help keep the child safe during the seizure and be a calming influence afterwards...
Mom of course is ecstatic at the potential this dog has to make a difference in her daughter's life.
Does anyone have any experience in training a seizure alert dog? Any good references to info on the subject?
Of course as a breeder I have the biggest grin on my face tonight. I can't take credit that the dog alerts but I love the fact that one of my dogs will be able to help someone. It just doesn't get much better then that.
That is really amazing, Betty! I had always assumed seizure alert dogs had to go through extensive training to do what they do.
Sure makes you wish they could talk so they could explain exactly what it is they are sensing. Whatever it is, that family is very lucky to have gotten that pup from you!
Yeah its pretty much natural for some dogs to sense something is wrong with their humans. Most of the training is only fine tuning the behaviors you want or elaborating them. Perfect situation in this case. I'm proud of her too.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
Wow Betty, simply amazing! I love hearing stories like this.
Animals are amazing creatures. This pup is sure to make a huge difference in this family.
It sounds like the pup was meant for this family, makes me a believer in things happening for a reason.
Awesome Betty!
