I know this has probably been addressed before, but I need everyone's advice.
My first remote collar was a Petsafe Big Dog Remote Trainer (105-S). Just like their invisible fence (which I also used to have - at my parents' house), it was crap. It worked ok for a month or two, and then started acting up. I got rid of it and now I'm looking for one that I will not have problems with. I'm on a limited budget, which makes it more difficult; but here are the collars I'm looking at:
Innotek FS-300-A - which says on one site that it has up to a 1/2 mile range, but on another it just says 500 yards, so I'm not sure
Dogtra 200NCP Gold
and *maybe*
Innotek SD-200-A
I appreciate ANY input, because I have no experience with any of these.
Thanks,
Kristen

THANK YOU, Pedro. Like I said, I do have experience using them, I just got a crap one to start out with. One of my main reasons for wanting it is because we do a lot of hiking and backpacking and stuff, and so I need it to perform properly, and I need it to perform immediately when I press the button. My main thing is that I do want the longer range ability. I'm past the "just wanting to train obedience" with the e-collar.
Thanks for the link to Lou's group; I'll have to go there and check it out.

My vote is for the Dogtra -- the ability to fine tune the stim level is very nice. There are a number of choices depending on range and options.

I gotta go with Dogtra.
You basically have the Dogtra or the TriTronics, they essentially have all of the same features and functions.
I've heard argued that the Dogtra collars last longer and have a bit more consistency in use.
I like the Dogtra for three reasons, mine have always worked without problems, they look a lot better than the TriTronics , and I like the feel of the remotes better.

I would stay away from the Innoteck collar not to bash their product in anyway but that was the first one I owned and had MAJOR problems with it. My neighbors garge door opener would set off the collar not to my dogs pleasure I am sure it was a fluke and I did call the company and got a full refund and a serious apology, but after that it left a bad taste in my mouth for their products. I think the Dogtra collar is a good product for the money and cheaper is not always better as I found out.

Good recommendation to join the Ecollar Plus list but it's not my group. I'm just a member. It belongs to Paula Lind. Paula was a co-moderator of one of the other Ecollar lists but didn't like the way that the owner ran it (he could use profanity and abuse other members freely but if anyone else did, they'd be removed) so she left and formed her own list.
As to the Ecollar, I too recommend the Dogtra but there's a problem with very sensitive dogs at very low levels, below a 15 or so with the 200 Gold. It doesn't seem to occur with the other models in the line. There are two fixes for it. One is home made with parts from Radio shack and the other is from Dogtra but the latter requires you to send it in for adjustment.
If anyone is having problems, the appearance is that the collar is misfiring and delivering too high level of stim at low settings let me know and I'll send you the fix. If you want to send it to Dogtra for the adjustment, you need to ask for the "Special Lou Castle fix" and mark it "Attention Mark So."
Lou Castle has been kicked off this board. He is an OLD SCHOOL DOG TRAINER with little to offer. |

I've always used dogtra. Mostly 200's but I've also used the 1100, 1200, 1800, 175, 150. I think dogtra is ok. The 1800 seemed to be the most solid dogtra collar I've used. I have used the tritronics pro 500 and that was nice but the remote is huge!! I just finished testing out the innotek adv-1000 and I liked it a lot. I actually used the adv-1002 which is the 2 dog unit. The innoteks are inexpensive and have a nice range of levels.
Lou, I trained the min pins I was speaking about on the ecollar board with the adv-1002 and was really satisfied with the results. I might start using innotek more often.

So it seems the consensus is for the Dogtra collar, then, right? That's the collar I was leaning towards, but I just wanted to make sure I was getting the right one. Thanks again, guys!
