We just had a couple pick up a pup last weekend that are from the Chicago area. They may have gotten a little bite from the Schutzhund bug and Joliet is the closest club to them. Anyone here a member or have any info as far as their training methods/philosophy etc.? Feel free to pm me if it's negative! The main reason I ask is that they spoke with someone that asked them to bring the pup to the club for an "evaluation". She's 11 weeks old.
It's not totally unheard of to charge for an evaluation, and $30 is fair. Our club is considering a motion to implement an evaluation fee, as we get a lot of "visitors" who come to several sessions, benefit from free advice and training trips, then disappear when club fees are requested.
Can you post a link to their website? I'm not from that area, but visited a site for a club in that area that really appealed to me. It was an all-breed schutzhund club run by a competition decoy who also breeds Rottweilers. The training system was similar to ME; positive reward-based training with some corrections and pressure. If this is the same club, IMHO, it is seriously worth checking out.
BTW, an evaluation by experienced trainers/handlers is easily worth $30.
ETA: some of our peeps bring young puppies out. We keep their exposure age-appropriate, mostly looking for drive and engagement with a flirt ball or tennis ball, and socialization. We also like to get a feel for the handler's expertise level.

Edit reason: eta
The club I'm thinking of isn't affiliated, but I liked the what I saw on the site much more than I liked Chicago or Indian Creeks' sites.
To me, good training trumps all the bells and whistles.
The thing that concerned us more than anything was the protection vid I watched had about a dozen dogs doing protection and not one harness anywhere in sight. All protection done with a collar.

Thats from a seminar, it doesnt really look like puppies. But even so, I think its ok to use an agitation collar with a puppy, it depends on the dog. Here's a video of him using a harness:
