Just an FYI
A dog can die from skunk spray if it's in really tight quarters. I know of more then one working terrier that it's happened to.
Seems to cause a toxic shock type thing to the liver.
One of my hunting partners was a vet and we always had ringers solution to get an iv going anytime a dog was skunked in the ground.
The dog may be fine a day after the spray but can die later.
Again, these happened in VERY tight quarters underground and the dogs may have spent a bit of time in it till they were dug to but I've also "heard" about coon hounds having the same reaction.
In talking with different vets many have no idea it can happen.
there is a big population explosion of skunks in north vancouver . we can smell their ( normal ) odor as they pass by the bedroom window at night .
i don't if i mentioned this before , but when hector got a face full last summer , first thing i did was get him into the ocean where the salt water seemed to ( a ) wash off the goo , and ( b ), totally diluted the odor to the point where he could be in his crate in the house the same night .
My first job out of college was working at a zoo. The zoo vet refused to descent skunks (we had some in a cage) but taught me how to do it and gave me the Ketocet for putting them to sleep.
Once I did 5 baby skunks in a row!! I got to go first in line at the supermarket I shopped at for DAYS!!
Gosh I've been up since 2 this morning. There's a pack of coyotes moving through (hopefully not in) and there's quite the howl fest going on out there with all the yipping they're doing.
My boys are all in but they've added their share to the choir. Yes guys, I know they're there.
We usually hear about a cat or two that's gone missing after they move through the community like this.
And this is probably bad but I'm so hoping that all the cats are safe and nestled in their homes, leaving just the black and white ones with the husky tails to succumb to any thoughts of a late night snack for this pack.
