Raven is 12 weeks old and weighs 20 lbs now. Her breeder suggested fish oil be added to her diet. I would ask her breeder the following questions, but she is out of town, and I think this forum might be more knowledgeable anyway.
Are regular fish oil supplements like they sell for people okay for dogs? How much do I give her? When I searched for the topic of fish oil, there were recommendations for adding vitamin D as well. Do I add that too, and again, how much?
I had started squirting one 1200 mg gel cap on her food in the morning, and she has good, solid log poop every time, except once a day when it is very soft logs or pudding, or some of both. Could the fish oil be causing that?
She is eating Taste of the Wild kibble.
Mod note: See below ..... It's vitamin E, not D

Which TOTW? Not a fish one? Then I use a gram (1000 mg) of fish oil per ten pounds of dog. Some people use a gram per twenty pounds of dog. Your gelcap would be in the ballpark (but I use more).
Is it a good brand? (Is it a named fish, either salmon or the tiny fish like sardines and anchovies?)
I work up to the dosage over a few days.
Most dogs will eat gel caps with no problem, without piercing. Like caviar! LOL
When did the poops become soft? When did you start the fish oil? Did they coincide?
How many poops per day, and which time of day is pudding?
You mean Vitamin E, right, not D? Yes, Vitamin E can be depleted by oil supplements, even to the point of a deficiency. I use natural (not dl-alpha, but d-alpha) with mixed tocopherols. For this size dog, 100 IU would be good. What size can you get? (It doesn't come in loads of sizes and you may have to get 200 IU. If so, you could pierce and squeeze and throw away some of it. At around 35 pounds, I'd bel OK with the whole 200 IU.)
All JMO.

Venison TOTW, which I alternate with the waterfowl one. (I can't stand the smell of the fish one).
The fish oil is Spring Valley brand--it's what I tried taking at one time. The label says it contains sardine, mackerel and anchovy. Yes, I meant E. If I cannot get it in town, I can order online.
Raven poops four times a day: early morning, late morning, afternoon and evening. It is sometimes the afternoon, sometimes the evening when she's has the pudding, and sometimes it's only half the poop, the other half is logs, though softer logs. The only thing I give once a day is the fish oil and some plain yogurt, but only the fish oil coincides with the timing.

What I'd do:
I would back up to a third of the daily dose and then work up gradually to the whole daily dose over several days.
AND I would spread out the dose over the meals (whether it's two meals or three you are giving).
Since you are using capsules rather than liquid, for this experiment I would mix the day's worth of fish oil into the day's worth of yogurt, stir, cover tightly, and refrigerate. (Don't leave pierced capsules exposed to air, even inside the fridge. And I would not pierce and mix up more than one day at a time. Fish oil is very vulnerable to air, light, and heat.)
Keep a simple little journal of the pudding poops and how they relate to the meals.

Thanks. I will try that and see how she tolerates it.

Has that pup been dewormed? I always think most hound pups have pretty strong stomachs, can tolerate changes better than some other breeds.
I had some trouble with Taste of the Wild myself a while back causing diarrhea in my dogs, at least I blamed it on them and stopped feeding it.

Yup, she's been dewormed. I have been changing her food slowly from the Iam's puppy food the breeder used to TotW. I would have thought it was the food change, but it was just the one stool a day that was pudding/partial pudding; all the other stools were nice and firm like they ought to be.

It could be the yogurt too. Some dogs can't do milk products, even yogurt.

One other thought; a while back TOW had a food recall.
Not sure if this is the problem, but you might want to see if you can find the LOT number for the food.

Connie's suggestion seems to have worked fine. Nice, solid logs all day now.
Sometimes I worry about the amount of time per day I spend checking for, picking up, or otherwise being involved with pee and poop.
