QUOTE: A team of golden retrievers made an 800-mile journey from the Chicago area to Newtown, Conn., over the weekend to comfort people affected by the shootings Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Lutheran Church Charities sent about 10 of the dogs for residents who want to pet them while they talk or pray with the dog’s handler, said Tim Hetzner, president of the Addison, Ill.,
organization. ... The dogs often visit people in hospitals, nursing homes and parks. ... The dogs’ first stop Sunday in Newtown was Christ the King Lutheran Church, where funerals will be held this week for two children who were killed in the shootings

I just saw some video on CBS of little Newtown children holding and hugging the dogs.
Our local radio station (Brookings Radio in South Dakota) is collecting Teddy Bears, Night Lights and Blankets to send to all the little survivors of Sandyhook. I love that they are thinking of those who are going to live with this horrible memory.

I saw a clip on the news of little kids reaching up for a teddy bear, and a line of teddy bears and candles. And no matter what it is, the people there realize from this that all of us care .... it has to help, even if just a little, to know that the country is with you in grief and support.
It has really been pretty amazing all the 'comming together' from all over the country in the horrible event. Sad that it has to be some kind of horrific event to do that, though.
On Friday @ 9:30 am they are calling for a minute of silence all over the state (per the govenor) & all churches etc are requested to ring their bells 26 times in honor of those that lost their lives in the school.
They have even been remembered at ball games all over the country on TV shows etc. Pretty incerdable. I think that fact that 20 of these were children really hit home with just about everyone. It could have been any school anywhere & that has scared the crap out of everyone. You just never know what can happen..in a second to change your life forever.
As Connie said... we really can't do much to make the hurt go away for the families but to know that all our hearts are with them hopefully brings some level of comfort.

Dogs arrive in Newtown to comfort survivors
CHICAGO — A team of golden retrievers made an 800-mile journey from the Chicago area to Newtown, Conn., over the weekend to comfort people affected by the shootings Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Lutheran Church Charities sent about 10 of the dogs for residents who want to pet them while they talk or pray with the dog’s handler, said Tim Hetzner, president of the Addison, Ill., organization.
“Dogs are nonjudgmental. They are loving. They are accepting of anyone,” Hetzner said. “It creates the atmosphere for people to share.”
