I have 3 of the Leerburg fleece pads and love them, but we also have a bed that has the big thick foam in it. I don't really understand how the bed starts to stink when Tanka does not, but it does. And I can't get the smell out. I washed the cover, used a natural smelll removal spray on the foam, left it outside int he sun every day for days, covered it repeatedly with baking powder. Still stinks, not as bad but not fresh.
I have a steamer, one of the ones that will sanitize. I use it on the rugs to get out smells, and with the natural spray it works well. I was concerned about melting the foam or releasing some toxic plastic fumes by super heating it. I am allergic to and very sensitive to chemicals of many kinds so I don't use them, so febreze, etc is out of the question, even if I would want Tanka to have to breathe the toxic fumes from that stuff.
has anyone had any luck with getting smells out of this stuff. The bed is pretty new, less than a year old and we have been battling this for awhile. I called the co I bought it from to ask their recommendations but they said the co who makes the beds does not have a consumer line and has no other cleaning info than to wash the cover. Tanka loves the bed with a fleece pad put on top so I hate to take it away.Plus it was $120.

Sunlight + Air + febreze. All 3 or a combo for a quick fix. Remember that open cell foam is a lot like a sponge. But I don't see a problem dropping it into a hot soapy bath and letting it soak with some mild soap, like ivory/baby shampoo. Then make sure that you rinse it completely.
That is what I thought, and the people I bought it from said, "Don't make it wet!" Really, why will it fall apart? I have a spare horse trough that I use to wash big big stuff. I can't use febreze. I will definitely give it a try the next day it is above freezing.
