I like terriers a lot, and I think there's a good assortment of smaller (under 20 pounds) terrier breeds out there that I admire. However, their propensity for killing small creatures and also dog intolerance is a turn off. If I want a vermin killing, dog intolerant dog I'll get another pit bull and be happy.
I also like the Schipperke and well bred smaller poodles.
My intention with a smaller dog is obedience, agility, and an active house dog. I'm pretty active outdoors so brachycephalic breeds are charming (love Frenchies!) but probably out of the question.
Does anyone have suggestions for small dog breeds? I'm open to adopting but would prefer to go with pure or dogs that have a strong primary breed look.

at my agility club we have very good: autralian cattle, mini poodle, mini pin and even a corgi and many puff/fluff balls that I have no clue what they are.
All are nice and smart

Corgi's are nice but I groomed for a little while and all that hair... GAH I don't know. That'd take a lot of thought! I did pet sit/dog walk a petite female Pembroke and she was such a sweetheart. I always looked forward to her dad going out of town!

I have an 11 month old 25lb micro sized ACD looking for a home >_> may be a little to big...but she would love to do agility and obedience, catches frisbees, and I'm in Ohio....juuuuuuuust so you know >_>
but to actually answer the topic. Papillion (sp?) and a nicely bred poodle....super trainable, love their owners, and quite cute (even the poodle if you don't cut them funny).

At the moment I'm just shopping for breeds, Jamie. I have to admit your little girl is adorable! Do you think she's up for agility (as in physically capable)? If you still have her in August then we can talk
Thanks for the link, Tammy!

She's a bit toed out in the front end, but there is NO sign that will cause any issues (and plenty of breeds are like that naturally), and she's very athletic, fast, and willing to climb in and around anything. Also super trainable and highly food motivated....and hey she's adorable and cuddly too ^_^
However if I still have her in August I'm going to probably be not going to be sane enough to realize it XD. Three high energy dogs in my room is probably going to get old pretty quickly. She does settle VERY well inside (still tethered here) and crates pretty easily but the dynamic of working three dogs with boundless energy is much more exhausting than two. Frisbee has become a lifesaver XD she's need formal training work with cats (not cat aggressive, but without the healthy fear of cats puppies should have...which means she's a bit of a jerk to them) but now we've gotten some pack structure stuff out of the way she's loving being with my boys.

River is a jerk to my cat, but between him getting fed up with her and clawing the hell out of her face and me getting on her case whenever she pesters him, she's learning to ignore him. I'm looking forward to exposing her to my husband's roommate's cat, who is, from what I've been told, pure evil toward dogs. It'll do her some good, I think.
I'll keep your girl in mind. We're house shopping so things may fall into place sooner than later.

The Schipperke is basically a barge ratter.
With your plans for agility, obedience and a house dog the 'Miniature" Poodle, not necessarily the toy, would be a good bet as would be a Papillion.
I'm a terrier person at heart and have had 5-6 different terrier breeds over the years but a need to understand the little bassids is a big help.
Having another Border terrier or "possibly" another JRT is on my bucket list. I'm a glutton for punishment though.
