Hi All
I live in Queensland Australia and am new to the Leerburg website. I am so glad we discovered Leerburg. I have been going over & over the articles & videos absorbing as much information as possible before my new girl comes home. I have been absolutely blown away by the results of such 'nice' & relatively easy (once understood by me) methods. So my pup hasn't arrived home yet but have purchased play pen, tugs, toys, food etc & have ordered 2 dvds from Leerburg. Where to go from here??
I will be doing all training myself based on the Leerburg/Michael Ellis methods but am wanting some backup &/or clubs (IPO or Schutzhund) for when I get stuck or we are ready to move on to the next step.
Is there anyone on here that knows of someone experienced in the above sports or personal protection who uses the Leerburg/Michael Ellis methods?????
If money wasn't an object I'd be over there annoying you all in person learning as much as I could
Cheers
Marker training has made raising/training a puppy so much easier then having to wait till the pup is old enough for "formal" training.
I'm not sure about marker trainers down under. Same with Schutzhund/IPO.
I do believe that traditional pinch collars and E-collars are outlawed. IF that's true then you way ahead of the game with markers. My absolute only choice with a puppy.
We have a couple of members out your way, but the only one I can readily recall by name is Brent McGarva, in New Zealand. He is the most active on here, but haven't seen him in a few weeks. If you send him a pm, he may get an email notification and reply.
He has staed numerous times that he is frustrated by the lack of clubs and helpers (at least, close to him). I have seen some linked on the internet, but know little about the geography. You may be able to find help via internet search.
Wow thank you all for your replies. Firstly my little girl is a working line GSD. My dvds arrived friday. I ordered 8 weeks to 8 months and establishing pack structure. I am going to order the training with food and the tug one. Can you recommend others that would suit my situation. Personal protection or IPO depending on access to decent club. Just to have a happy engaged dog would be a wonderful start. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I have one day left to cram some more study and prepare. Wish me luck Cheers
OK First question lol
New pup has arrived home. She constantly whines, even when sitting right beside me, but I'm putting that down to stress (new environment/people). But the thing I've noticed most is that she doesn't want to leave my side. When I take her outside on lead she just keeps sitting behind me or between my feet. She has a look about but that's it. Not interested in venturing out on her own. She saw my horses on the other side of the fence and didn't react in any way. It's like she's an old dog in a pups body, been here, seen that. She's not interested in tug but will keep working on this as it's only day 1 Patience Teresa!!!!
Is she about 7-8 wks old Teresa? Just separated from mom and the rest of her liter? Thats where the whining comes from, so your right about that. She'll get a little braver by the hour and in a couple of days you'll have a better idea of her temperament & personality.
Puppies are programmed to stay very close to you, it's a survival mechanism. You just became her entire universe. Now is the time for structure and routine, and LOTS of sleep.
Thanks!! Yes she is 8 weeks today & arrived home yesterday. She is completely lost, poor little thing. She slept in her crate last night & has been in & out of her play pen this morning. I have to order the dvd's quick smart. I have her looking at me for food but I'm lost as to whether or not I'm sposed to be saying sit when she sits for it or just reward her for looking at me regardless. Ok off to order dvd's. We're at very early days yet, squarking in pen/crate, not having a clue where to find me unless I'm right in front of her etc etc. No interest in toys atm. She's very cute. Will get pics up asap
