Tons of Malinois people work 9-5 with their dogs. Some of them have more than one. I think if you're ready for it, you're ready for it.
And if you're doing ringsport, you want a Malinois.

Thanks everyone for your helpful answers.
A bit more details about my situation:
-- my husband will be the primary handler for the Mal
-- he is very knowledgeable about training methods, but has not had a WL dog yet
-- like me, he has experience with pet dogs and is a firm and fair leader
-- my husband works a 7a-5p job and would do training before leaving and after arriving
-- in between, I'll be the nanny for the Mal, because I work from home
-- my concern is that I'll be spending a good amount of time with this dog, taking it out for potty, walks, and occasional feeding, and wonder if that will affect its bond with my husband who should be the primary handler
-- of course, I'd avoid too much shmoozing with the Mal, but am unsure how this would play out
Thanks for any further thoughts on this.

IMHO, as long as you are meeting the needs of the dog, you will be fine in the situation you describe. The dog will quickly learn when it's training (or work) time, and when it's "be a dog" time. There is no reason the dog can't be a successful sport dog who is part of the family.
Just have a plan, and be on the same page when it comes to allowable behaviors and training techniques.

Yes, and please don't let anyone scare you out of a Malinois. If you want a working dog, get a working dog. I understand everyone's concern, but no good working dog is going to be any easier to handle. Everyone starts somewhere, and I know tons of people with their first DOG as a Malinois and they are fine. If you want it and want to work for it, you're going to be great.

Echo the two previous posts, with this to add...
IMHO, though your husband will be the primary handler, you can still learn to handle the dog and, if you're going to be spending a lot of time with the dog, I strongly suggest you do. There is a couple in my sport club that are currently working to repair the gap caused by teaching the dog that he has only one master. The dog should learn, IMO, that you are FIRM and FAIR also.
FWIW, I saw a dog competing in a trial today that almost left the field. He was looking for Mommy and not familiar enough with the handler that was working him, even though it was a family member who had been training with the dog for a few weeks.

A good dog with a good trainer can live in a family situation & still compete at high levels.
My friend & SchH mentor competed to national repeated 1st places & other top ten national places (along with international copetitions) with dogs he bred & raised in his home with his family...thru the years with 1-5 kids in the house.
If you are going to do this.....You will need a lot of excellent guidance to do it right. Find a club with a good TD & excellent helpers (not all are great with bringing along pups) even if you have to travel to get the right help. Don't just choose the club down the block unless they are very good. Search until you find a really good club.

My husband works from home, and spoils her rotten all day, I work 8-5, and train her. I wake up an hour early and train before work, and put in at least 1 1/2 hours every night-rain, snow, freezing, heat-doesn't matter, she needs it like food and water. She knows when to be a lovable playful pet, and when it's time for business. I admire her work ethic, and enthusiasm.
It works just fine for us!
She requires tons of time and dedication, but I knew that going in, and wouldn't trade her for the world.
