It's constantly raining and snowing and the mud is out of control, mud and manure. My English Shepherd has a huge coat, not Lassie, not quite, but close. He is giant too. Big spongy feet. Lots of garage time.
Over the years we've had rugs (dogs often drag them onto the lawn),crates outdoor
(dog isn't really thrilled, he used to be crated in the house, and air doesn't move real well in the plastic crate), towels to lay on which are then washed, etc. etc.
What is a good solution for a dirty big farm dog? He's the kind of dog that could get a hot spot.
My two GSDs were inside dogs till they were each 7-8 months. That is to developer house manners and bond with the family instead of the other dog. Then it's outside 24/7. The have a dog door in the side of my wood working shop and two double walled, straw filled, insulated dog houses inside the shop. One is a "typical" GSD coat and the other is a very heavy coated long hair.
I don't brush them during the winter but for the last few weeks on to fall they get brushed a couple times a week. Played with or trained most every day.
Lots of time with me and the grand kids so "people time" is most every day.
They are together 24/7 and rarely interact with one another because they were raised with people in the beginning.
The site "PetEdge" has an outdoor bed that is very similar to the beds mentioned above. It is fairly cheap (if a b!**h to put together) and my 120lb Rott adores them.
The destructive lab I am fostering keeps wanting to shred them, but prior to her coming around they lasted years... But she would shred any bed anyway, so I don't count that against them.
