Hi, my name is Brandi, I live in Oklahoma where all the storms are hitting!!!
I have 8 animals - 2 dogs Tex, German Shepherd; Roxy, a whippet/Pit bull mix - 4 cats Rascal, Cheyenne, Torrie and She-Ra and 2 Missouri Foxtrotter Chief and Scout.
I will tell you a little more about my dogs: Tex and the story how I ended up with him. Roxy and I were at the boarding barn) and I was tossing hay to my 3 yr old colt Scout, well I looked up and I saw this dog running down the road - pretty busy country road and so I yelled at Roxy. She was looking at me from where she was laying in front of Scouts gate like "what mom I am right here" ok well didn't think anything of it. So before we headed for home I decided that we needed to take another walk. There is a gravel road that goes around the entire property of the boarding barn and it's exactly a mile... and I walk it sometime to get exercise... so we Roxy and I took off - well on the way back to the barn this young GS come bounding up to Roxy... and he had a piece of cotton rope for a collar and wired to the rope was a chain... and he's beautiful. So I took him home with me, put out ads saying that I found him etc... nothing no one claimed him. So I took him to vet and had him neutered and he's been mine ever since. I will post pictures... soon.
Roxy is a Whippet/Pit bull mix - brindle in color white chest - has the whippet long body, tucked up belly and long tail but has the broad nose and head of limke a pit bull.... my boyfriend at the time about 7 years ago - he is now an ex LOL showed up with this 6 week old puppy - stout looking thing... tiny and fiesty - then it grows up to this long body, long legged looking thing - but she's a sweet girl and she's faithful as any dog can be and I love both of them with all my heart.
Thank you for letting me join, anxious to start to getting to know all the members.
It was about a year ago that I found Tex running down the road.. and yes Roxy is about 7 yrs old.
Right now I am just doing basic obedience with Tex. I found this forum through watching one of Michael Ellis videos - the one about training with food... I would like to see if maybe Tex would be good at tracking, thought about search and rescue - not sure about Schutzhund with him though.
That second one is a perfect intro if you have never done any marker training (clicker training, for example, is marker training), and the Ellis one (the first one I linked) is great if you have some idea of marker training and you're ready to learn the best way to proceed.
"Right now I am just doing basic obedience with Tex. "
Basic ob with markers is a joy for both you and the dog.
When I took him to the vet to have him neutered, the vet is thinking any where between 9 months to 1 yr old.
I borrowed the video - I need to watch it again and return it.
When I was a member of our local obedience club (actually I was the president) we had an instructor that did clicker training and I find the whole marker training interesting.
Tonight if I can I will post pictures of my furkids..
