I would lead my baby everywhere with a flirt pole. After trying to train a mature dog with low prey drive, I'd be imprinting as if there was no tomorrow.
I would be taking many more videos than I did. They become big dogs overnight. You think you have time "next weekend" or "soon" to record more videos, but then you turn around and they are full grown.
What I do with my pups....Play, play, play & bond & build a bond of trust with your puppy. Expose (socialize) him to EVERYTHING you can think of. Let them have time to just explore the world. Have FUN!!! Let him learn that you are the greatest thing in the world in his life! Introduce marker work....But mostly just 'muscle memory' work. (Lots of time to actually TRAIN him down the road.) Potty & crate train.
Marker train the pup to be handled and examined. Lift the tail, touch the teeth and gums, hold paws and nails, etc. Our vet commented what a pleasure she was to work with, and she holds still when I wipe her muddy paws, clean her ears and the like.
I know it's just a little basic thing, but it makes life a little easier for me and less stress for her.
If I have a puppy that is really touchy about being handled by the vet...I make extra trips to the vets with that pup just to have some time with one of the vet techs in an exam room to teach the pup that being handled by the vet or vet tech is not the end of the world & needs to be tolerated. I do this with all pups....but a few extra times with a touchy pup.
This way the pup gets lots of treats & gets to play & have some fun with the vet tech while the pup learns this valuable lesson in a fun way. And gets familiar, in a good way, with the vet office without having the feeling of dred that usually comes with a trip to the vet for most dogs.
