I made this video for a friend who wanted me to show him how I teach the retrieve. I thought I would share it here to get some constructive criticisms.
90% of the technique I use is from Michael Ellis DVD , 10% is my own stuff I made up .
I did rush a few training steps to make the video complete . But feel free to point out any aveneues of improvement.

I like (and use) the backchaining method, too, and kudos for clarity. Also doing this inside to get it solid, and not throwing it too far at this point, before taking it to the exciting outdoors.

Dear god what a beautiful dobe.
I taught my dog to hold by being a complete freak, and screaming and yelling, trying to steal the toy from her.
Eventually i would hold her face, then squeal and throw food, then throw the toy. She now runs up to me and crams the toy into my front, and waits dead still for me to start the game.
I was 13 when i started training with the dog, and had no other knowledge than what my dog taught me.. so, i may not have been that bright.

Was the squeaky toy your idea? I've never seen that before but it's ingenious!
When I was teaching a calm hold I would tap on either end of the dowel rod. That movement in his mouth made him clamp down on it.
