I have a 8mth old male (Otis grandson) who has the strangest habit. He was very mouthy as a young pup but he never bit down--never a mark on the skin. I could not get through the yard with tied shoes though. He has always clicked his teeth at me and me alone. That's the best way I can describe it. Almost like the toy wind up teeth they sell in novelty stores, but of course not as fast or for more than about 5 seconds. He does it after we've been apart for awhile and it's like his greeting. I don't think it's a dominance thing or that he's trying me out to see if he can get a nip in to up himself on the pack order. Sometimes he'll then flip over on his back at my feet. Is he just welcoming his Alpha back and showing his acceptance? As soon as I give him a scratch or tell him he's a good boy he's ready to go for a walk or get to work. Just wondering--I've never heard of a dog doing this. "TJ"
My 19mo male nibbles on me like I have fleas sometimes.
I think it is a sign of affection since he has been taught not to bite me and is not supposed to chew or hold onto my hand.
Sometimes it tickles,it can really hurt though like being pinched!
Generally I just push him away and say "quit" when it starts to be painful and he heaves a big sigh and lays down.
Guess I'm no fun

Yep Erin, your dog is attempting to groom you. My adult dog doesn't do it, but I housesit for someone else and her GSD jumps on the bed and wakes you up by re-styling your hair with his teeth. My pup does it too.... Makes you feed special doesn't it.
