Hello everyone,
I ran into someone walking my dog and they asked why do gsd backs differ between sloaped
and narrow backs. I didn't answer this one. To add on does one pose a greater benefit over the other health wise
Simply depends on the lines. Generally speaking, American show lines are extremely sloped and have a ton of angulation. West German show lines are less sloped and more rounded, some heading towards "banana" looking. Working lines tend to be more straight, with less angulation.

" sloped and narrow backs"
You mean sloped vs. straight, or "roached" vs. straight, right?

" .... The back is straight, very strongly developed without sag or roach, and relatively short. The whole structure of the body gives an impression of depth and solidity without bulkiness."
I can only say that when someone says the show line is more correct then they should look at good side view pics of a wolf or coyote.
Mother nature spent thousands if not millions of yrs developing the wild canines yet didn't give them the roached/banana back or the extreme angulation seen in show dogs.
The show line runs in a circle or at most a 12 mile AD and is declared a winner yet the wild canine will run for many hours in following a deer/elk/buffalo herd waiting for the weak to falter.
It's pure arrogance to believe man made the changes to better the GSD as a breed.

Absolutely!
Here's a lint to a site that shows a picture of the old show line American GSD as well as the modern and several other GSD lines. http://www.aboutgermanshepherddog.com/types-of-german-shepherds . You'll note that the old show line dog, the GSD type I grew up with, is not extreme at all.
Thank you all for all of the great articles loads of information! Is there any reason why akc and other regestries havent gone into more details when it comes to the breed standard? Why isnt
von Stephanitz standard used?
I'm guessing it has a lot to do with the money it generates. Are there any undesirable traits that german lines have produced?
Standard are open to interpretation by the judge. That means a judgement call.
The German lines are often roach backed and to much coat. The American lines are often way to angulated in the rear. Both have very similar standards. Go figure!
I also believe in both German and American show lines the true character of the GSD is watered down or totally lost for the sake of looks.
Of course this is all nothing more them MY judgement call.

Bob, IMHO your "judgement call" is right spot on the mark.

No different than working line breeders breeding for color and destroying the temperament, conformation & workability of the dogs in the process. Black sables, anyone? They've become such a fad color that it's sad.
I have had three working line dogs & my most recent pup is W.German show lines. She, interestingly enough, has the best temperament and workability of my dogs thus far. But then again, her breeder is all about breeding dogs that can work, "even though they are show lines".
So I really do generally agree with your post, but I make the stand that 90% of breeders out there are doing it wrong. The complete package GSD from any lines is getting increasingly rare.
