hi, my malinois is 7months, I know you are supposed to wait a year for running, but the amount of running she does with her doggie friends far exceeds what I could keep pace with especially since I haven't run since my past dog died so I am out of shape. Would a 20-30 min slow run with walk breaks really do damage to her joints? Obviously stopping if she wanted to and not forcing her. I would love to run her as opposed to walk her every morning but if its too risky then I will just wait and sit on my ever widening butt

I personally would not risk it, regardless of how much she runs on her own. I will allow my pup to run as much as he wants off leash, however I limit fetch and any forced excercises. Perhaps I am slightly over cautious.
Congrats on the pup. Near impossible to find a good malinois, or gsd in Canada.

I think that sometimes we don't realize that there's a difference between a pup playing freely on its own and taking it for on leash runs (even slow ones with breaks).

Avoid hard surfaces...they are tough of joints.
I don't know if it is any different with mals...but the growth plates on GSDs don't close until around 2 years of age. (as is the case with most larger breeds) I am very careful of any heavy activity until after that point.

If your pup is not fat I can't believe 20 minutes of jogging with an out of shape human is going to do her any harm. You want her to trot, not lope.
I wouldn't do this every day, but every third day I think would be fine.
If you start getting huge mileage (because you have gotten into such fabulous shape!) then perhaps not.

Thx maybe I will wait a bit longer. ..is there a way to tell when her growth plates have closed? ..I thought it was a year...yikes...this is why I wanted an adult dog lol...I miss running so much but its not worth the risk to her to overdue it. We do have a nice soft trail along the ocean I could take her some mornings.
Thx I got her off craigslist actually from some people who didn't want her anymore...I had been looking at rescues but coz I needed an animal friendly dog it was very hard to find any locally and then she popped up and I'd never seen a mal on cl or petfinder locally ever so I felt it was fate. Not gunna lie though I can see why they got rid of her she's more work than any dog I've ever met let alone had lol but she is in her forever home now and spoiled

Is there a place you can run with her off leash like a field ? Let her set the pace and play around freely while you jog around the edge of the field. You get in shape, she gets to run with you but not WITH you and there's no force, she can change pace no problem, moderate herself?

I do take her to the off leash sometimes which is a gravel path along the ocean and through the forest. It is soft and she rips around there with my friends dalmation at the speed of light, its very amusing to watch.

cat , i'd run with that dog . . . just in small distances and not on consecutive days . see how it goes .
and like jamie said there , the dog doesn't need to be on leash with you , just make sure you have high value rewards with you so every time she makes contact with you , you make it a markable / rewardable moment .
