A friend of mine is applying for a job at a kennel to be training dogs. They train GSDs and mals for protection, detection and police work. His experience is over 10yrs working with many breeds as a hobby and professionally. He's rescued dogs...worked in a kennel...competed and placed high in agility trials...done some schutzhund stuff and has had 2 working bred males of his own.
He doesn't know what pay to ask for. I have no clue really...this is not a kennel help position, it to be working with the dogs...he's a proficient trainer...what should he realistically ask for starting out?
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
As I am sure you know, "self employed" trainers are almost guaranteed to earn much more. If I were your friend I would ask for, and expect to get 25$ an hour minimum. I have also heard of people being payed per dog, ie. Once the dog has learned all intended commands etc they receive a pre discussed payment amount.
When I worked in kennels they paid by groupings of lessons 8 weeks of lessons for $250, the trainer got 50% the kennel got the rest (their facilities, land, electricity, so on). When I trained dogs (owned by the kennel) I made about $16.00/hr to start.
My animals are not "like" family, they ARE family.
Thanks so much for your responses. This is in Virginia BTW. So do you think with his level of experience, about $15/hr is ok to start? (assuming Virginia is a slightly cheaper place to live than New England) I'm sure there will be some training needed if they have him working with police dogs...he doesn't have much knowledge of law enforcement related safety procedures but as far as dog training in general, he's good.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
