I've had only a couple of dogs that were, for lack of a better word, left handed. Their natural walk with me was on the right. They always wanted to walk on my right going up steps, through a gate, etc. MOST of the dogs I've had would fall into my left side even befoer they wee taught anything.
Being left handed myself, how do they know this isn't the case with some dogs wagging with the other side of their brain?
Just something to think about.

I gotta agree with you Bob. How do we know that is what it means? Seems like we're always coming up with our interpretations of dog language. Maybe we should just ask a Border Collie?? LOL!

I have seen that article before. I have to agree with Bob. I have had dogs that naturally tend to be more comfortable with one side then the other when walking with me, just being around me in general. I have also seen them wag their tails more to one side or the other in the same situation. So who knows for sure what they are thinking.
So what about other times when the dog is concentrating on say..searching.
My male when searching ....say for his ball or whatever I have hidden....will wag his tail back & forth in both directions until he gets tighter into the scent cone...then he wags his tail in a circular motion until he gets right on top of the hidden object. Does it EVERY time this way & always has.
So what does that tell us.
MY DOGS...MY RULES

I am convinced our dog speaks fluent english, and is just waiting for the perfect opportunity to tell us the whole story Until then, I'm pretty sure it will remain a relative mystery.

This made me think of the article I posted a few months ago saying studies suggested that left-pawed dogs were more aggressive .
Poodle is left pawed, left sided, left tailed. I have never noticed with all my other dogs, I have noticed with him. "High Five" was taught very early on, he'll only use his left paw. The faucet trick, sleeping, holding toys, all left. In a crate, left side which he's looking at the wall, if he were on his right side he'd see the happenings. Diving, a slight turn to the right are stairs, he full circles to his left. His tail is usually to the left spinning like a whirly bird.
He's super friendly, outgoing, and never a sign of any aggressive behavior. "Wariness" is not a word I'd attach to him, CLOWN, would be.

I have a left-handed dog right now. He's my first one.
Even though I have had him since 2005, I still catch myself looking around and muttering "Where's Leo?" when he's quietly and attentively in his everyday heel position -- on my right side.

Tammy, I remember reading that article and thinking, "Wow. My left-handed Leo might be the most un-aggressive dog I've ever owned."
