Can't get your favorite breed of dog because stupid @#$% like:
Can't bring your dog along with you because of stupid %#$ like:
Insurance coverage on house or apartment will go way up. Just because of breed.
(Shouldn't they be having a temperament test on every dog, regardless of breed instead? Naaah, then everybody with an aggressive killer golden, poodle, or golden-poo would have to pay a higher insurance bill.)
People around you, or in your life are terrified of the breed in whole.
(JUST because they heard news of some dog of its breed attack a poor child, or adult who provoked the dog.
Do they really think everybody who gets a dog of that breed will end up with a "killer"?)
Your favorite breed is banned.
(This is BS....L..
Why instead of banning every single dog of a "vicious" breed, Can't we just have all of its breed pass a temperament test? Or complete a training course?
Can we not set a law saying,
"Starting from -insert date here- every -insert vicious dog breeder here- will need to pass a Canine Good Citizen test, or take this advanced training course and pass."
Nah, lets just ban EVERY dog of its breed, regardless of dogs training, temperament, history, value. (Some place even put a service dog to sleep, because of the BSL. Long story, but true.)
The place you are visiting, has restricted your breed.
(Due to certain breeds temperaments, these breeds are not allowed on the camp grounds at any time. Doberman, GSD, Malamute, All of the bully breeds, Dalmatian.
I'm looking for weimaraner on the list.... Poor people never listed the breed.... Well, wait until they meet my psycho weimaraner..)
(Don't worry about silly example above. My dog was fine the entire time, as always. See, i do this thing called being responsible for my dog, and the people and animals around her. So nothing really ever happens... But if i let it, it would.)
All i want is the breed i love. A dog of a breed that works best with me and my lifestyle. A perfect match.
I am part of the 30% of dog owners who the state DOESN'T have to worry a thing about. Can't they just give me a free pass? HeII ill PAY for my pass.
Sign me up for an ownership test or something. I don't care if its a 17 week course i must attend in person daily, and pay 10 bucks a day for.
I'm mad. And that perfect potential agility GSD in the shelter being PTS, because of its breed..
Now i'm sad.

Although a PITA and not fair (IMO), BSLs have become a fact of life.
One more reason why people should put more thought and effort into selecting a proper breed for their situation...

Brianah, I can understand your frustration. I've been on many, many calls where breeds other than the so called vicious breeds have bitten/attacked people and other animals. Temperment testing is not foolproof, neither is CGC. A lot of communities are recognizing that BSL does not work, and are working towards making enforceable dangerous dog laws ( this is NOT breed specific). My GSD have been stereotyped from having people pick up their kids and cross the sidewalk to being turned down for rentals because of the breed of dog I have, and my dogs have better references then I do.
I don't know what you're specifically referring too but there are ways to counter BSL, write your legislators and outline why bsl does not work, become an ambassador for your breed of choice, volunteer at a shelter and help socialize dogs, educate people who have no clue and think that only certain breeds bite. The more the general populace sees the so called vicious breeds in a positive light its easier to chip away at stereotypes. jmho
My animals are not "like" family, they ARE family. |

I wish I could share your optimism, Jodi. I know too many people like my stepfather.
He is 70yo, and is a country boy who has owned dogs since childhood. However, he is thoroughly convinced that pitbulls (and not cats) are the spawn of the devil. He also believes that a dog being trained in bitework is being taught to be vicious. IME, the scales are tilting further toward BSLs than away from them.

But what about the younger generation? They're the ones that will change BSL. I find that they are less likely to be automatically biased against breeds than the older generation.

The (general) younger generation is learning more from memes, conspiracy blogs and internet rumors than actual observation. I do not hold out more hope for younger people.*
(Having one of those days..)
*Brianah, this clearly does NOT include you.

I know that this will not appeal to a vast majority of readers here, but a very popular "rock" band, "Protest The Hero" wrote a song and released a video on their recently released album, "Volition" for this specific issue titled "A Life Embossed." You may not enjoy the music, so turn it down, but watch the video and read the lyrics while the video plays, it's an awesome message.

But BSLs are a new age phenomenom. There were none thirty years ago. In this warped society, PC trumps new and old ideas alike.

That is a great video, and message. While watching it it gave me pause that there really is a holocaust for certain breeds going on. I am SO grateful that I live in a region where attempts to enact BSL have been shut down by people.

Video is amazing.
All my "perfect match" breeds are considered "potentially deadly, dangerous".
I probably wont be getting another dog because of this BS.
I dream all the time about living "the good life".
A small studio apartment, with my little performance dog. Walking down the street to my grooming job everyday.
No need for a car, cable or internet, tv.
Just me, my little apartment, my cell phone, grooming job, and my little agility dog.
My dream life! And i can't. Because the breeds i love, the ones that are the best fit for me, are hated.
FML.
-.-
And for all of you relying on the younger generation to help change BSL... well that alone is BS.
All these kids are doing is making things worse. Heck, there are more kids out there with pit bulls than ever. And what they are doing is making things worse for the breed. I see it every day when i walk down the street.
