I met a new neighbour last night, Millie, the six year old retired Greyhound, aptly rescued by a lovely, refined and quietly spoken old gentleman in his later years who moved in next door to me a few months back, he told me he had Labs and Retrievers all his life, and had gone to the local rescue to find a small dog as a companion, but saw Millie behind the bars and he said she just looked at him with her big tired eyes and that was that.
It really made my heart glad to know these two sweet souls have found each other.
When my lot go to join their ancesters that's what I plan too Elaine, the massive influx of retired greyhounds, and recently more and more 'accidental' greyhound x lurcher matings being rescued from the tracks in Ireland has caused a headache for the rescues over here, although the amount shot at the side of the track after losing too many times, far outweighs the lucky ones rehomed
I think the average race life is around 3 to four years, although an awful lot are culled early on, the thing that struck me about Millie was how OLD she looked, her coat could be better and I like to see a bit more covering on the hips and spine, I think she was rehomed pretty quickly, so it will be nice to watch her come along over the next few months.
In general, the lives these dogs have lead prior to rescue have been lonely, stressful and exhausting; the handful of greyhounds I know personally are just glad to have peaceful, quiet and relaxed homes with love and no demands put upon them.
The old gentleman told me he gets up, lets her out, she has her breakfast and has a kip until they take a leisurely stroll around the village, and this is then repeated later on with supper and a constitutional before bed.
A pretty good fit for a human who worked hard all his long life, and his quadruped that was wrung out by six, which as Betty pointed out, was a good age for a racer to be retired.
