The black prong collar is stainless steel, so if your dog reacts to stainless, it might react to the black prong collar.
The Curogan is the one that is least likely to cause discoloration, but there are no guarantees that your dog won't react- some dogs react to any metal.
Axle is a tan w/ some white, it is turning black around the area the prong is used, strictly on his underside. We were hoping we could get away with black since it's coated and not chrome which is what I think he is reacting to. Is there anyway to test this?
Is your current prong a Herm Sprenger or a chrome plated collar? The "pet store" brand prongs can be nickel plated instead of stainless steel. This could be where the staining is coming from.

Got it from the trainer when he came home, pretty sure it's a Herm Sprenger - I will have my girlfriend double check.

It should be noted that, even if it is made by Herm Sprenger, that's no guarantee that it's stainless steel. They make both stainless steel and the chrome-plated varieties, plus the Curogan -- all with big differences in price, of course!
Thanks, Kelly! I was wondering if the stainless ones had any additional marking to that effect. I think I could tell the difference if I had the stainless and chrome side-by-side, but I was looking at mine and wasn't really sure. Now I know -- chrome.
I've had issues with one of my dogs when I've used it on a regular basis. He's black, so I don't notice any hair discoloration, but I definitely have noticed hair loss and scaly skin on the underside of his neck. I was thinking about trying the Curogan, but fortunately I've gotten away from having to use the prong.
