Well, we lost Sable. Left to go eat and came home to find her dead in the floor. At least it was quick at the end. We had her 16 years and she was an adult when we found her. She could have been 17 or 18 years old. She had already apparently gone through an animal shelter or rescue, as she had the "spayed" tattoo on her tummy. It was easy to see how we ended up with her! We "thought" we had a good recall on her the first time we went to the lake. But then, she saw ducks. In the middle of the lake. And off she went! I didn't know whether she would drown chasing them or Steve and I would have heart attacks chasing her. I lost my shoes in the mud, but we finally corralled her! The next trip to the lake, we invited Mr. E-collar along. I can't remember if she got lit up twice or three times that day, but it was enough to cure that problem for all her long life. After that, when you called, "Sable, here!" she was Johnny-on-the-spot! She absolutely adored sitting front for treats and was such a character! A couple of years ago, she had a CVA, stroke, something, and lost all her balance. I had to bundle her like you do a baby to keep her from hurting herself. After a few days she recovered. Another seemingly at the time, less severe incident about a year or so ago, left her blind. She could still do the stairs and get around, as long as the other dogs didn't knock her off-course. She mainly slept on the couch in her blankie, which she loved, but she never became incontinent and continued to eat well and once in a while get frisky and silly. We'll miss you old lady! She won't use the Rainbow Bridge, she'll swim across!
My condolences to you and your family, Becky. Sable was a beautiful dog who was fortunate to have lived a long, wonderful life with a family that loved her so much. Run free at the Bridge, Sable.
So sorry for your loss Becky, she had a good and happy life with you, and slipped away peacefully in her sleep, and it's clear from your tribute she was a real character.
There's a lot of love in what you just wrote, you were lucky to have each other I am glad that her waning years were relatively easy on you both. Keeping you in our thoughts.
