I've never had this problem with any other dog. It's a 5 month old Maltese. I'm training her for a friend. I've used Michael Ellis way of getting engagement. I can get her to sit, and down by luring her, and I'll try fading away the lure after she starts doing it every time, but once I stop luring her she won't sit or down. I've gone back to luring just a bit, but I can't seem to get her to perform the commands without luring her.Can anyone help me out?
Variable reward? Don't completely fade the lure out too soon. Reward at different intervals. Dog has to believe that a reward will come eventually and at any given time.
Rewarding every behavior after the dog understands it fully will create a situation where the first time you remove it the dog may shut down with the next command.
Not necessarily a refusal in itself but confusion on the dogs part.
Maybe the lure is what she has learned is the cue for the commands. Dogs tend to rely on visual cues a lot more than audible ones. Did you incrementally fade the lure out? like over a week or two?
Some dogs don't realize that you are praising them for coming to a specific position rather than just following the lure. I reward in place a few times with a "good" and then release them with a "yes" so that they have enough time there to realize that it's the position that's being rewarded. Some dogs just need more time to connect that they are in a sit and that's where they get rewarded.
