I need your help giving me good reason why I shouldn't spay Annie. I have a 7 month old malinois female out of a nice working lines. Her father is Cid Meggan Bohemia and her mother is from marrax place had 12 puppies in total. I have been training and working with her in French Ring and search/rescue. She is doing very well in both sport. I really like her personality- she is very balanced in most of her drives (all areas). Not so bad to live with, loves to do bitework and obedience, very attached to me, and very friendly and social to most dogs and people.
Lately, I have been doing lots of research on whether to spay or not spay her. I have a mixed feeling about breeding because there are not enough home for each puppy. I have no interests in breeding her, but if she has all those good qualities that could pass down to her pups. Would that be waste not to breed her? I don't know. I am leaning more on spaying than not spaying her.
How does female in heat behave? Are they usually noisy and loud?

Here is a good explanation of the long-term health pros and cons:
http://www.naiaonline.org/pdfs/LongTermHealthEffectsOfSpayNeuterInDogs.pdf
QUOTE:
For female dogs, the situation is more complex. The number of health benefits associated with spaying may exceed the associated health problems in some (not all) cases. On balance, whether spaying improves the odds of overall good health or degrades them probably depends on the age of the female dog and the relative risk of various diseases in the different breeds.
It explains these benefits and risks.

I would suggest that you allow your nice bitch to have a heat cycle and see how you get along, and then decide. While it is true that allowing her a single heat cycle will increase her chances of developing breast cancer the chances are still small for a spayed dog.
You will have to keep her away from the fellas for 3 wks after you notice her vulva swell and the first few drops of blood.
Decide for yourself if this is something that you can live with.
If she is 7 mos now, I'd expect she will come into heat any time, but most likely when the days begin to be longer, like February.

"I need your help giving me good reason why I shouldn't spay Annie."
seems yr gut feeling is to spay and you want to be talked out of it.
my thoughts are only the most exceptional specimens of the breed should not be spayed.
from yr post she seems like a nice girl, but is she exceptional in a breed improver kind of way or just a nice girl.
stating my bias - I am an advocate of spay everything unless proven otherwise.

never had a female , but always felt that my dogs had characteristics that should be passed on . . .
probably every body who has a really good dog feels that way , but in the end duane , i realized that i was a handler / trainer , and that breeding should be left to the breeders .
i don't think you will lose any of the work ethic or enthusiasm that you have now , and you won't have those concerns around that " time of the month " issues to deal with .
and like that old adage regarding daughters , with a male you only have one d!ck out there to worry about . with a female , you've got to worry about ALL the d!ck$ out there .
so if you are committed to not breeding her , why put yourself through the trouble ?

The majority of my dogs have been male but of the half dozen or so females I've had one spayed. Two males neutered. All because of health reasons.
I've had one female spayed and two males neutered. All health reasons.
I'm not a breeder and don't intend to breed but I want my dogs, health wise as natural as possible.
That's a matter of responsibility that everyone has to make for them selves.

"How does female in heat behave? Are they usually noisy and loud? "
depends on the individual of course but it is not unusual to expect EXTREME behaviours, escaping, undirected aggression, stress....
as far as affecting work, seems to be variable as well, some dogs get better and some are prone to weight increase.
of course you will not lose 2 months of training per year while yr dog is locked up on heat.
please go do some volunteer work in a rescue, the piles of dead dogs that result as a consequence of joe public not spaying should help inform yr decision.
it is not just about you, there is a community involved as well.

I really don't think it's fair to compare a responsible working home to "joe public". They are much more prepared for a female to suddenly turn into an escape artist among other things.
Spaying obviously can't be reversed. I'm with Betty.

I wouldn't spay a working dog until the growth plates closed due to signifficant increase in the chance for hip dysplasia and other ortho issues. Provided of course that you're confident you can prevent her from getting pregnant.
