I am looking for some information from those of you with more experience with raw diets than myself. I've been feeding my adult dogs raw for six months now and they're doing well. However, I haven't found too much information on foods, supplements etc. for weaning. All my previous litters have been onto the old puppy food moistened with evaporate milk etc. Billinghurst says to just start off with the chicken backs. Any help welcome! Wondering about how old to start with some veggies, is yogurt and cottage cheese good for them, should I grind or chop? Help! Thanks for any tips.
I start out with a milk mix... and as an aside i give my pups chicken wings.. smashed with a hammer.. starting at 3 weeks of age.. They don't really start eating them until they are about 4 weeks old.but they tug and gnaw on them.. then I just let there mom finish them up .. at 4 weeks I start adding meat into the mix... still feeding the wings at least once a day... at 5 weeks I lesson my milkmix and start adding some veges a few time a week.. I use many different types of meat.. venison.. beef.. chicken wings.. by 6 weeks they no longer get milkmix... just a regular raw diet... I feed alot of chicken wings/ backs.. I also give some beef liver several times a week.. I add cod liver oil in one meal a day.. I don't start adding regular vitimins until they are about 7 weeks old.. which is when I start separating them into crates when they eat.
Thanks Jody for the tip on hitting the wings with a hammer! That sounds a lot easier than chopping them up. What do you put in your milk mix? Any idea I've been using of Billinghurst's is to make the veggie/ground beef mix into patties and freezing it for convenience. Mine come out looking like meatballs and I can adjust to one or two depending on the size of the dog.
