About a week ago I was doing some retrieve training with Tanner. When he opened his mouth to take the pipe I noticed a growth on the inside of his mouth kind of right behind his right lower canine. I took him to my regular vet who immediately said that it was highly likely that it was cancerous. Talk about a punch in the gut.
I had a biopsy and x-rays done yesterday at a dental specialist. The biopsy results won't be back until next week but the x-rays showed that the jaw bone was effected pretty much guaranteeing that it is cancer. I'm not doing major surgery such as removing his entire lower jaw on a 10 year old Boxer so at this point I'm pretty much waiting to hear how much time I have left with Tanner.
In a younger dog the surgery might be worth it. Oral cancer spreads and metasizes quickly. Check your dogs mouth regularly inside and out!
Sorry to hear this one Cathy, feel for you.. Never easy when you have to make decision's like this one. In a general sense, you should be doing full body checks regularly for the overall health and well being of your animal. You never know what you might find.. Just a good habit to get into with animal husbandry..
Crossing fingers and toes and sending out prayers for you and your dog. ;-(
Sorry to hear about Tanner Cathy, our first Boxer had a sizeable tumour on his gum that grew to a fair size quite quickly, he actually lived with it for quite a while, and it didn't cause him any pain.
Will be thinking about you both, and hoping for the best.
