Favorite dog fiction, suitable for Christmas giving:
I liked the Edgar Sawtelle novel....
And something like "Running in the Rain"....
Also training books -- perhaps some favorite Leerburg ones, not video, books ---

So many!
I think my first dog books for reading were those by Albert Payson Terhune.
Of course Jack London's "CALL OF THE WILD" was right there also.
I don't know if LB still has them but the three volume set of
"APPLIED DOG BEHAVIOR AND TRAINING" are top shelf.
Expensive but they are more like college text then training books although they cover just about anything I've seen or read about dog behavior and training.
I got the set one at a time with Christmas/Bday/Father's day, etc LB gift certificates.

YES, all the Lad & Lassie books, plus every single novel about dogs in my hometown library -- And my favorite as a little girl was the gift of my mother's OWN childhood copy of "Beautiful Joe", a book that has informed my personal values throughout life ... I bought a large volume of "collected dog stories" the first year I was married (can't recall its title, after 40 years, sorry) that had many famous K9 tales in it like "Verdun Blue", "The Biscuit Eater", "Ohondongella", "Weep No More, My Lady", "The Dog Who Wouldn't Be", and of course, "The Incredible Journey"

"Lobo King of Currumpaw" the story is about a wolf(ok not a dog but worth a read)and based on facts by Ernest Thomas Seton(founder of the Boy Scouts)
"Old Yeller" by Fred Gipson
If you prefer not to cry after reading; "Bark If You Love Me" by Louise Bernikow, is a funny lighthearted read.
The list goes on and on and on but those are the first 3 that came to mind.

How could I not have listed "Old Yeller"? My copy was "dog-eared" when I was a kid! THANKS, Sheila

I'll add another that I just DVRd for the grankids a few weeks ago.
"Where The Red Fern Grows".
Old Yeller for sure. I've probably seen that a couple dozen times and each time I cross my fingers that it ends differently.
Probably do the same thing the next time I watch it.

Just an FYI side bar to all the Disney dog movies.
William Koheler, renowned for his no nonsense, heavy handed dog training was the trainer for many of those movies.
I still have a couple of his books I bought in the 60s.

Last Christmas, my Dad gave me a book called 'Judy' written by Damien Lewis - not that Damien Lewis! - about an English pointer, who went into a POW camp with her military owner, who had been captured and held prisoner.
Apparently it has a happy ending for her, but I can't bring myself to look at it, especially as I know how sweet and gentle my two are.
I just can't bear to read it....

I had a red fern growing on top the grave of my first competition dogs.
That shade garden held many pets that passed on and each had a special plant on top of it.
Guarding Angel hosta on one. Blue Angel hosta on another, Bleeding Heart on another, etc, etc.
One of my daughters insisted on an Ostrich Fern on top of her tiny Parakeet. Those things can really spread.
